Phillip and Julia Beverly Lewis

Phillip Lewis Sr. and Mother Julia are my roots and we are the branches. Phillip Lewis and his wife, a sister Celline and other members were brought to Ruston, Louisiana before the end of slavery from Chester, Carolina.

Celline married John Bradford and homesteaded in Kirkland, Arkansas. After they had been given their freedom, Celline and John Bradford had three children, Mandy, Francis and Ellen.

Phillip Lewis Sr. and wife homesteaded in Lincoln, Parish along with others in the family. One other couple that was close to them was Pappy and Mammy Johnson. The names Lewis and Johnson were given to them by their slave masters.

Having survived the hardships and struggles of slavery and become a free man, Philip Lewis Sr. and his wife began our roots with 11 children: Oliver, Crawford, Phillip Jr., Isreal, Dock, Jimmy, Samantha, Anne, Penny, Rena and Harmon.
