First Presbyterian church is situated on property donated originally as a site for the Baptist Church in Ruston. This organization continued on the site until about 1910 when the property was bought by the Presbyterians.
The present structure was built on the site in 1924 at a cost of about $40,000. The exterior of the building is little changed from its original appearance. Though the interior has undergone some improvement through the years, care has been taken to maintain its original atmosphere and personality.
Of particular note in the structure are the sanctuary, with its quaint yet rich use of architectural design; and the stained glass presentation of the Christ, which portrays Him in greatest serenity with light in evening.
The land on which First Presbyterian Church is located is the only property donated for religious purposes by Ruston founder Robert Russ which is still used for such purpose. As a group, First Presbyterian Church celebrated its own Centennial in 1984, being constituted itself in 1884.
The information for this site was taken from a pamphlet entitled "Centennial Historical Tour" Ruston, Louisiana, 4/14/1983. A copy of this pamphlet was provided by the Division of Historic Preservation, Louisiana. Without their assistance this page would not have been possible.
