Jackson,
Velma Doris Horton-Patton was born in Tallulah, Louisiana on June 01, 1932. She was the youngest
child of Herman Horton and Cherrie McMahon Horton. Velma, (Bay) as she was
known by family had two sisters Viola Irene Randle and Dorothy Lee Cotton and
one brother Herman Horton Jr., all of which preceded her in death.
Velma accepted Christ as her personal
savior at the age of 12. Velma was educated in the Madison Paris School System
and at Triton College. Velma was united in marriage on December 11, 1953 to
James Patton the father to all of her children. He preceded her in death. She
married David Jackson in 1981 and he preceded her in death also. Seeking a
better life they moved to Chicago in 1948. They joined Mount Carmel M.B. Church
under the leadership of Rev B.D. Moatry. In 1952 she joined Greater White Stone
M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev Johnny Howard. In 1958 she united with
Original Rising Star M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev R.L. Griffin. Upon
moving to Phoenix in 1981, Velma was united with First Institutional Baptist
under the leadership of Pastor Warren Stewart Sr. She was a very compassionate
and loving mother, grandmother and great- grandmother.
Velma leaves to cherish her are her
two sons James Patton of Los Angeles, CA and Edward Patton of San Antonio, TX.
and four daughters Sherrie Horton of San Antonio, TX, Valarie Patton and Debbie
Patton of Avondale, AZ and Marjorie Hollis of Phoenix, AZ. Velma was the
grandmother to 11 grandchildren William Horton, Lenard Harris which preceded
her in death, Jon Harris, Terrance Patton, Tiffany Languedoc, Chyna Patton,
Robert Hollis , Allen Patton, Stacie Patton and Shawna Patton. Velma also had a
total of 12 great grandchildren. Velma had two brothers-in- laws that preceded
her in death George Randle of Broadview, IL and Johnny Cotton of Phoenix, AZ,
and sister-in-law Mary Horton of San Francisco CA, and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
Velma moved from Maywood, IL to
Phoenix AZ in 1981, where she worked as a nurse at Cigna Healthcare until she
retired in 1996. Velma was a dedicated professional nurse for more than 30
years. Velma's compassion for people will be greatly missed along with her
caring spirit for all people. She was one of those unsung heroine that will be
missed for a long time to come. We all loved you but your father wanted you to
come home and celebrate with all of your other family. Thank you for being such
a humorous and good listener for so many of us. You are now at peace. "I
