EVANS, Ga. - Col. (Ret.) Donald E. Poe, 77, entered into rest on Thursday April 3, 2008 at his residence after a brief illness. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday April 9, 2008 at Warren Baptist Church with Pastor Brett Legg officiating. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park with military honors.

Col. Poe was born on October 18, 1930 in Waterproof, LA to William A. and Effie Poe. He was a 1952 graduate of Louisiana State University and entered the Army as a commissioned officer from Jan. 1952 - Sept. 1982. He was presented with the Bronze Star in Feb. 1969 at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, and with the Legion of Merit in June 1969 at Long Binh, Vietnam. Col. Poe served as Director of Training Development at Fort Gordon from 1972 - 1975, and as Director of Evaluation from 1976 - 1978. He was President of Communication and Electronics Test Board from 1978 - 1979 and acting Chief of Staff from 1978 - 1982. Col. Poe served as Commander of Headquarters Command from 1979 until his retirement in Sept. 1982 when he received a third Legion of Merit. He was also a recipient of the Air Medal.

Col. Poe was married to Margie Evans Poe for 29 years until her death in March 1982. He later married Norma Bragg in April 1983 until her untimely death in Oct. 2000. He was a devoted member of Warren Baptist Church where he once served as a deacon and taught Sunday school. Col. Poe was a member of the Kelley - Sisson Sunday school class.

After Retirement, Col. Poe enjoyed hunting and eagerly looked forward to the opening of deer and turkey seasons each year. He was a member of the Beady Branch Hunting Club, Pinetucky Gun Club, Wild Turkey Federation, and the Paralyzed Veterans Association. Col. Poe will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his daughter; Cindy Hooks and husband Billy of Augusta, two step sons; Brian Bragg and wife Tammy of Evans, Darrell Bragg and wife Sharon of Martinez, a step daughter; Lynda Workman and husband Gene of Augusta; five grandchildren; Kevin Bragg, Kristen Bragg, Alex Bragg, Alyssa Bragg, and Dawn Workman Craft, and several nieces and nephews. Col. Poe was also preceded in death by his son; Donald Glenn Poe.

Pallbearers will be the United States Army Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Lewis Muns, Randy Street, Dan Street, George Peters, Gasper Blandeburgo, Olin Plunkett, and members of the Kelley - Sisson Sunday school class. The family will receive friends on Tuesday April 8, 2008 from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Platt's Funeral Home Belair Rd. If so desired, memorials may be made to Warren 2020 Vision, 3203 Washington Rd.
