Rhonda Cay Rhodes -
Madison Parish, Louisiana
From Tallulah Madison
Journal July 26, 1973
Rites held for Rhonda
Cay Rhodes
Funeral services were held Tuesday
afternoon at 3 p.m. for Miss Rhonda Cay Rhodes who died Sunday, July 22 in
University Hospital, Jackson where she had been in critical condition following
an automobile accident one mile north of Newellton, La. on July 9. Her father,
Mr. Rhodes, was also injured in the two-car collision.
The services were
held at the First Baptist Church of Tallulah with the Rev. Crawford Williams
officiating, with interment in Legion Memorial Cemetery, Newellton.
Miss Rhodes was the
only child of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Herman Rhodes. She was seventeen years old.
Pallbearers were:
Andrew Sevier, Lane Williams, Ronald Dean Edwards, Benton Russell, George
Cummings and Eddie Arledge.
Honorary pallbearers
were Craig Finley, Tommy Lott, Gerald Scurria and
Billy Kinstley.
The following was
written by Miss Rhodes earlier this summer and was to have been released this fall
following her completion of work in summer school. A few necessary changes have
been made.
"Miss Rhonda Cay
Rhodes left her junior year at Tallulah Academy with many high honors. She
competed in district rallies as well as state rallies, and acquired many medals
and one plaque. She attended the North District rally in Ruston and received
second place in a girl's trio singing "Just For
Today" as the second soprano. The same day, she played the beautiful piano
arrangement of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and again received a
second place.
The next day she
returned to Tech to compete in the Typing I division and received the honor of
1st place in the district. The following month, she went to Baton Rouge to
compete in the State Literary Rally where she received third place in typing I.
Her spirits still soaring high, she went to Huntington Academy in Ferriday and
received the 1st place plaque for typing I in the
Independent School Rally. Also with these honors, she received a certificate
and medal from her school for typing 85 words a minute, plus another award for
perfect school attendance.
Aside from these
awards this year, she also had many more from past years to add to her
collection. Last year, she won second place in a brass sextet while playing her
trombone, and her freshman year, she received a band trophy for the most
improved high school band player. She had received numerous 4-H medals, ribbons
and trophies for exhibits in La. State Fair and North La. Cotton Festival,
Bastrop. She participated in state "Sew with Cotton" contest.
Rhonda was attending
Warren Central High School in Vicksburg, Miss. for a summer credit in English
IV which was interrupted by the accident. This was her last requirement and she
would have had sufficient credits to receive her high school diploma. However,
she had planned to return to graduate with her class in 1974.
She had been accepted
as a freshman at Mississippi State College for Women at Columbus, Mississippi
upon her completion of the required hours in September. She was planning to
major in clinical psychology with an aim toward a PhD in this field."
Survivors are her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Rhodes of Burnside Drive.
