Carl
"Chick" Sanders Sr. was born on August 9, 1947 in Tensas Parish, Louisiana.
He is the son of Christella Hunter and Charlie Sanders. Carl departed this life
on Monday, November 15, 2021, at Memorial Hospital of Gulfport, Mississippi at
2:45 a.m.
Carl accepted Christ as his personal
savior at an early age. Carl was a member in good standing at Pearl River
Community Seventh-day Adventist Church in Poplarville, Mississippi, where
Pastor Mung is the pastor. Carl also attended Richardson Seventh-day Adventist
Church in Richardson, Texas. Carl was a member of Mt. Olive Church of Plano,
first known as Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Plano, Texas. Dr. Pastor Samuel
Fenceroy is the pastor. Carl was ordained as a deacon under the leadership of
Dr. Pastor Samuel Fenceroy.
Carl graduated from Thomastown High
School in Tallulah, Louisiana. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Education
from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He did his student teaching
in Angie, Louisiana. While at Southern, he participated in the Army ROTC
program.
After graduating from Southern he was
drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He was
honorably discharged. He received the following awards: National Defense
Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal W/2 Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/ 60
Device, Army Commendation Medal 1st AWD, and Good Conduct Medal 1st AWD.
After serving in the Army, he was
employed by Borden Dairy as a delivery driver. After leaving Borden, he was
employed by United Parcel Service for ten years. He started as Delivery Driver
and was later promoted to Supervisor. He left UPS to start his own business. He
was a subcontractor for many years. The work he did at UPS as a supervisor
prepared him to become self-employed and proficient in various industries.
Carl did his work as to Colossians 3:23.
"And whatever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto
men." Carl relocated to Picayune, Mississippi in 2009 from Plano, Texas.
He semi-retired and did organic gardening. He also installed flooring for
family and friends. There was never a shortage of work for him. He fully
retired in 2017. Carl enjoyed working with his hands, gardening, fishing,
reading, and flooring. He especially enjoyed being out in the open-air enjoying
God's great creation.
Carl has two children from his first
marriage to Jacqueline Brown: Carl Sanders Jr. and Chad Rael Sanders. Carl
married his love life partner, Anita Hamilton, on July 16, 1988. They have one
daughter, Anastasia Malika Symone' Brown Sanders. Preceding him in death are
his maternal grandparents, Lewis and Vesta Coleman; his mother, Christella
Coleman Hunter; his stepfather, Samuel Hunter; father, Charlie Sanders; sister,
Marilyn Thompson; brothers, Roy Coleman, Glosston Coleman, and Michael Coleman;
and brothers-in-law, John H. Knox, Kenneth Fitzgerald, and Harold Raymond Walker.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his
devoted wife, Anita Sanders; children, Carl Sanders Jr., Chad Rael Sanders, and
Malika Sanders; brothers, Ronnie Coleman and Samuel (Angela) Hunter; sisters,
Gloria Jean Howard and Flora Walker; brothers-in-law, Jim Bobby Hamilton,
Gerald Thompson, and James Hopkins; sisters-in-law, Dana Coleman, Bernadine
Hopkins, Lorraine Fitzgerald, and Michelle Knox; daughter-in-law LaFanya
Sanders; four grandchildren, Austin Villafarra, Kierra Condoll, Raven Sanders,
and Zion Sanders; three great-grandchildren, Macario Barnes, Aubrey Villafarra,
and Aurora Villafarra; aunts, Vesta Coleman, Elizabeth Owens, Bessie (James)
Gordon, and DeMary Burns; special nieces, Yolanda Reid, Sha'Donna Brown, Kristi
Bass, Alicia Hunter, Violet Thompson, Arianna Coleman, Rhianna Perez, and
Peyton Fitzgerald; special nephews, Akwan Brown, Tyler Fitzgerald, Samuel
Hunter II, Joshua Hunter, and Isaiah Hunter; best friends, Floyd Jenkins, David
Meredith, James Perry, and Jerome Williams; godchildren, Jada Dixon, Rashard
Dixon, and Aston Woods; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other
relatives, and many loving friends. He will be dearly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to
attend a visitation on Friday, December 3, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
at Audubon Funeral Home in Slidell. A funeral service will begin in the chapel
at noon. Carl will be laid to rest at the Southeast Louisiana Cemetery with
