Sen. Sevier of
Madison Parish Dies
TALLULAH March 26
(Special)
Louisiana State
Senator Andrew Leonard Sevier, 67, a member of the Senate for the past 30
years, died in the Madison Parish Hospital in Tallulah about 1:30 p.m. Monday
after a lingering illness of several years.
Sen. Sevier, a
cattleman and owner of a plantation near Tallulah entered the hospital Monday
morning shortly before his death.
He was a member of a
Tallulah Law Firm, Spencer Sevier & Adams, and president of the Tallulah
Production Credit Assn. since it was organized in 1933.
Funeral services have
been set for 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Tallulah Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
Dan Lott officiating. Burial will follow in the Silver Cross Cemetery under the
direction of the Crothers Funeral Home.
At the time of his
death, he was serving as president of the Federal Land Bank of which he had
been a member since 1933.
Sen. Sevier, a
veteran of World War I, was a member of the Tallulah Presbyterian Church and a
member of the Farm Credit District Board since 1950. He was a stockholder in
both the Madison Insurance Agency and the Tallulah Finance Co.
His survivors include
his widow Mrs. Irene
Jordan Sevier of Tallulah; three sons, A. L. Sevier.
Jr., Howard
Sevier and Warren
Sevier of Tallulah; two brothers, Albert Sevier
Tallulah and George
Sevier, Lake Charles: one sister, Mrs. Juanita Burton,
Tucson, Ariz., and nine grandchildren.

Sevier Dies Monday Following Lengthy Illness; Served As State Senator for 30
Years
Senator Andrew
Leonard Sevier's death at three o'clock in the afternoon, Monday, March 26,
1962, saddened a community he served well for over thirty years, as State
Senator for the 32nd District of Louisiana.
Senator Sevier was
born at Banks Plantation, Nov. 9, 1894. He was the son of the late George
Sevier and Florence Leonard Sevier. He attended schools in Tallulah and
graduated from high school in 1912. He received his degree from Louisiana
State University in 1916. Served in the army of the first
World War as First Lieutenant for two years. Returned to law school and was admitted
to the bar in 1921. He married Miss Irene Jordan in 1918.
Besides his
distinguished career as Senator, he was an organizing member of the Tallulah
Production Credit Association, and has served as its president since its
organization in 1930.
He began his law
practice, joining the Spencer law firm, which is now
Spencer, Sevier and Adams. He was a director of the Tallulah Finance Co. and
president of the Madison Insurance Agency.
He was a member of
the Louisiana Bar Association; a Director of the Federal Intermediate Credit
Bank of New Orleans, La. He had wide plantation interests in Madison Parish.
He has been a member
of the Louisiana State Senate since 1932, and has served continuously since. He
was chairman of the Judiciary A. Committee, serving as President Pro-tem of the
Senate, and he served as governor of the state a short time during the absence
of the governor in 1948. He was made an honorary member of the Louisiana Law
Institute, a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon social fraternity, and the Boston
Club in New Orleans, La. Senator Sevier held the esteem and confidence of the
voters throughout his servitude. He was always interested in the people of his
community, as well as the affairs of state. His wide friendships
in this community and throughout the state was attested by the very
large number who attended his funeral.
Funeral services were
held at the Tallulah Presbyterian Church of which he and his beloved family
were members, at four o'clock Tuesday afternoon, March 27, with interment in
Silver Cross Cemetery, under the direction of Crothers' Funeral Home.
Officiating were the Rev. Dan Lott, pastor of the Tallulah Presbyterian
Church, and the Rev. Mr. H. N. Alexander of Brandon, Miss., a former pastor of
the local church, and the Rev. Wm. Parkerson of
Trinity Episcopal Church.
Pallbearers were
Arnold Shields, Cliff Adams, C. B. DeMoss, Billy DeMoss, Maurice Ursery, C. E.
Walker, Bill Yerger and Ted Ivey.
Senator Sevier is
survived by his devoted wife, and their three sons, Andrew L. Sevier, Jr.,
Howard S. Sevier and Warren Sevier; nine grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Richard
Cole Burton, of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Albert Sevier of Tallulah, and
George Sevier, of Lake Co Charles, La.
Governor and Mrs.
Jimmie Davis and many other dignitaries of the State were among the host of friends
attending with all members of the State Legislature attending in a body.
