Colonel Johnnie C Stocks, Jr. (USAF
Ret.) was born in Tallulah, Louisiana October 5, 1932 to Johnnie Curtis Stocks
and Alberta Land Stocks. At the age of twelve he attended Schreiner Institute
in Kerrville, Texas and graduated in 1949. He then attended Louisiana Tech
University in Ruston, Louisiana where he graduated in 1953 with a BS degree and
an Air Force commission. He received a Master's of Science degree from Troy
State University in 1976. After many assignments, including remote tours to
Korea, Okinawa and Vietnam, he was assigned to Tyndall AFB in June 1982 as the
first Director of the Southeast Region Operations Control Center. He retired
from that position and the U.S. Air Force January 31, 1985 after 28 years of
service. Included among his more significant military service awards were the
Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service, three Meritorious
Service Medals and two Air Force Commendations. He also received the Korea,
Vietnam and United Nations Service Medals, six Air Force Outstanding Unit
Awards, one with valor and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.
He was preceded in
death by his sister, Dorothy Jane Hatchell and
daughter-in-law Jacque Stocks.
Survivors include his
wife of 62 years, Shirley A Stocks, daughter Melissa A O'Connor, son Benjamin P
Stocks, daughter and son-in-law Cynthia S Strawn and David A Strawn,
grandchildren Day C O'Connor, Timothy S O'Connor, Rory B Stocks and
step-granddaughter Leslie Atkinson, three great grandchildren Day C O'Connor
II, Ava Rose and Alivia Grace O'Connor,
brothers-in-law Howard R Patton and wife Nell, Harold R Patton and wife Nancy
and Glen Hatchell.
He was a member of
the First United Methodist Church of Panama City. Funeral services will be held
10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel
with Rev. Mike Young officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial
Cemetery with USAF Honors. Family will receive friends 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the funeral home.
