H. Allen announced this week that work on black-topping of the streets of Tallulah is scheduled to begin the latter part of this week or the first of next. The Louisiana Highway Commission has agreed to do considerable of this work in Tallulah, and this week began moving in an outfit for the project. Mayor Allen stated that the men in charge of this work for the commission have recently completed projects at Bastrop and Oak Grove and that the citizens of both places are very much pleased with the results. Mr. Allen stated that the first street to be black-topped would be the one east of the bayou leading from the bridge one block east and then on south to the end of the street, and the next is the one leading from the railroad crossing at the Stewart-Owen Company store on south to the corporate limits of the town. Another street is the one leading north from the Delta Chevrolet place. After this work is completed by the Highway Commission Mayor Allen says that other streets will be black-topped, and he hopes that the dust will be eliminated from practically every street in Tallulah. Mayor Allen says that he hopes that he will have the cooperation of the citizens of the town in this work, as he has several added improvements he would like to see made if the citizens will lend a hand. He also said that he would be glad to hear any constructive criticism or suggestions that any citizen may feel disposed to give. Work Is Started To Black-Top Streets Culverts Have Been Placed and Binder Is Being Placed Madison Journal August 12, 1938 Actual work has been started on the black-top work on the streets of Tallulah. On several of the streets culverts have been placed at the crossings where they are needed and now pit run binder is being placed on the street preparatory to the actual surfacing. The first street started on is the south end of the one leading south from the Y. & M. V. depot. This work started Tuesday. The binder will be placed on the other streets as fast as possible. The first covering is pit run binder which contains about 40 per cent gravel. After this is put down, it is graded and allowed to set up and harden, being graded when necessary to keep it level. The binder is given from three to four weeks to properly set, and then after it is graded level, it is coated with asphalt and gravel. There are three coating of this material to be placed on the streets, the first coating consisting of coarser gravel, the second finer gravel and the third very fine gravel. The asphalt is put on the street hot and as soon as it is sprayed, gravel is spread over it. Tins work is being done by the Louisiana Highway Commission, the outfit coming here from Oak Grove. A similar job has been recently completed at that place. Similar work is also being done at Mer Rouge. Ira Hugh Ervin and Garland Roberson.
