Mildred Marguerite Emory Starr of College Station, Texas, died at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Tuesday, July 20, 2004. She was 75. She was born in New Orleans to Harold Homer and Marie Edrington Emory and grew up in Maringouin. After graduating from Shadygrove School in Rosedale in 1946, she attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette from 1946 to 1948. She left the university to enter the business world as a legal secretary in New Orleans. Her father, Harold Emory, was a teacher, first in Reserve, then in Rosedale; her grandfather, Prentice Edrington Sr., was a state district judge in Reserve; and her great-grandfather, Nicolas Kuntz, was secretary to Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. In 1949, she married Douglas Perret Starr of New Orleans, an Associated Press newsman whose career as a reporter of government and politics took them from New Orleans to Jackson, Miss., and to Miami and Tallahassee, Fla. The marriage lasted 54 years. In Jackson and in Tallahassee, Mrs. Starr worked as a legal secretary in private law practice and, during legislative sessions, as legislative secretary in the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. In Tallahassee, her husband took a doctorate, and the family moved to Denton, Texas, in 1974 where he taught journalism at the University of North Texas. In 1986, the family moved to College Station where Starr taught journalism at Texas A&M University. In Denton, Mrs. Starr worked as an office manager for the University Rehabilitation Center. When she and her husband moved to College Station, she retired from business and turned to volunteer work with the Sunshine Auxiliary at the College Station Medical Center. Beginning in her 40s, she battled diabetes, breast cancer and Hodgkin's disease. For the next 18 years, as they took their toll, she withdrew more and more from the business world and volunteer work, focusing her efforts on her husband, her children and grandchildren, and her home. As the years wore on, she relied, first, on a walker, and then on a wheelchair. Despite her disability, she and her husband traveled abroad once each year for five years. She was a Catholic and communicant of St. Mary's Parish in College Station. Survivors include her husband and four sons, Michael Jeffrey Starr of Tallahassee, Fla., David Emory Starr of Los Angeles, Andrew Hampden Starr and his wife, Holly Davis, of Krum, Texas, and Jonathan Price Starr of North Bergen, N.J.; a daughter, Patricia Mary Starr Cole and her husband, Kevin Lee Cole, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two granddaughters, Heather D'Ann Dacus of Long Beach, Calif., and Caitlin Alexander Starr of Krum; a grandson, Liam James Starr of Fort Worth, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral was scheduled for Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
