GRAND JURY REPORT

Crowley Signal November 7, 1927

Reporting 39 true and 53 no true bills, the grand jury shortly before noon submitted its findings to Judge W.W. Bailey in the fifteenth judicial district court and was discharged until further notice.

The grand jury began its investigation Wednesday and the report of its findings, accompanying the bills were submitted by Edward E. Daigle, foreman, as follows:

We found a great number of carnal knowledge cases on the docket, but in practically each case the parties had married; but we find that in no case the parties had married; but we find that in no case they were living together, which condition brings, from the wife, charges against the husband for non-support. We feel that these marriages are contracted simply as a protection to the accused and we therefore recommend to the officials, that in such cases the husband, and especially where he is a father, be made to support his wife and child, if any there be. We realize that it would be difficult to convict an accused of canal knowledge after he has married the girl but we do feel that he should me made to support her.

We recommend a strict enforcement of the law against slot machines and call upon the officers of all towns and villages as well constables in the country wards to report to the District Attorney all such violations, as we see nothing but harm resulting from such operations.

We have examined the jail and find same in first class condition and have questioned the prisoners out of the presence of the officers, and find them well cared for and humanly treated.

November 10, 1927

Sentences were passed by Judge Bailey today and yesterday as follows:

Whitney Romero pleaded guilty to a charge of non support and was ordered to pay the sum of $1.50 weekly, bond to be furnished and in the event of failure to pay, to serve three months in jail.

Joseph Broussard Romero pleaded guilty to a charge of non support and was ordered to pay the sum of $1.50 weekly, bond to be furnished and in the event of failure to pay, to serve three months in jail.

Albert Roy pleaded guilty to the crime of assault with a dangerous weapon and was sentenced to pay $25 and costs, or serve 30 days in jail.

Gus Simon, charged with non support, was sentenced to pay $2.50 a week for a year, in default of payment to serve four months in jail.

Francis Richard entered a plea of guilty to a charge of assault and battery and was sentenced to serve 15 days in jail.

Laurent Thibodeaux was sentenced to pay $1.50 weekly for a year, pleading guilty of non support. Three months in jail was set as an alternative.

Alasko Morgan, pleading guilty to non support, was sentenced to pay $3.45 weekly for one year, or to serve three months in jail.

November 14, 1927

Sentences were passed by Judge Bailey:

Eunice Jones, colored, withdrew her former plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty to the crime of larceny to the value of $75. She was ordered to report for sentence on November 26.

District Attorney Gremillion filed informations against Evans Lejeune and Moise Daigle for non support.

The case of State vs. Felix Dupre, charged with non support and that of David Blanchard charged with carnal knowledge were nolle prossed.

The case of Cleobule Thibodeaux, charged with recklessly operating an automobile and injuring while intoxicated, was refixed for November 18.

HIDES TO BE USED IN GUIDRY TRIAL

November 18, 1927

Hides seized by the department of conservation will be used as evidence against Pierre Guidry of Church Point, H.S. Sealy of New Iberia, agent for the department, today informed the Signal, which yesterday reported the filing of charges against Mr. Guidry by J.W. McCain, local conservation agent.

According to Mr. Sealy, J.G. Durand, conservation agent, on Monday night arrested Mr. Guidry for having in his possession 230 possum and coon hides in violation of parts G and H, section 13, Act 80 of 1926, which reads as follows:

It shall be unlawful: (g) For any person, except a licensee, to possess at any time any non-game quadruped or raw green or undressed pelt, fur, skin or hide thereof; provided this provision shall not apply to licensed dealers; (h) For any licensee to posses between March 1^st and November 19^th in any year any raw green or undressed pelt, fur, hide of any non-game quadruped.
