L. C. Ewing, age 92, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2004 in Lincoln General
Hospital.
Mr. Ewing was born in Chatham, Louisiana, March 21, 1912, and
lived his entire 1ife in Jackson Parish. He was reared along with his seven
brothers and sisters on a small family farm. Upon graduation from high school,
he worked a year on road construction and later entered Louisiana Tech, where he
lettered in basketball. With the help of Huey Long, he got a job on the student
farm at Louisiana State university and graduated in 1935.
He then joined
the Civilian Conservation Corp and was stationed in Arcadia, Ringgold and later
on in McComb, Mississippi. Mr. Ewing joined the Army Air Force and earned the
rank of Lieutenant. Upon discharge from the Army in 1946, Mr. Ewing returned to
Jackson Parish and began a career in the timber business first working for
Tremont Lumber Co. and later on forming his own business in timber management
and procurement.
Throughout the years, Mr. Ewing demonstrated his love
and true regard for the land, timber and wildlife. His aim was to always be a
good steward of God's creation. He and his partner of 63 years, the late Louise
W. Ewing, gave generously of their time and resources to their church, community
and civic concerns. His love for and activity in the community was recognized
when he was named Outstanding Citizen in Jackson Parish in 1975.
Mr.
Ewing was an active force in the early years of the Louisiana Forestry
Association and was involved with both national and state business and forestry
trade organizations. Of particular interest to the Ewings were youth groups and
organizations and they were actively supportive of the Methodist Children's
Home, Silver Waters Girl Scouts Camp, and the youth programs of the Jonesboro
United Methodist Church.
Mr. Ewing was most of all a family man.
Beginning with his own parents down through his great-grandchildren, five
generations have enjoyed the love and care of this strong man with a soft heart.
He shall be missed, but always held as a standard of all that is good, decent,
honest and caring by Terry and Donna Ewing of Ruston, Randy and Rosemary Ewing
of Quitman, Ashley and Wendell Manning and children Margaret, Jefferson and
Rosemary of Monroe, Brandon and Susan Ewing and children Allison and Bess of
Ruston, Brad and Becky Ewing and children Barton and Maggie of Baton Rouge, Amy
and Jeff Janes of Nashville, Tenn., and Adam Ewing of Ruston; a sister, Callie
Wright of Shreveport; and his many friends and other relatives.
Lew was the son of William Oliver "Bill" EWING Sr and Maudie Caladonia MAY.
