Jan 12, 1982 Ira Duplantis Dead at 56 Ira Joseph Duplantis, 56, a native and resident of Grand Caillou, died Monday night. He was the U.S. postal carrier for Grand Caillou and Dulac since 1967. He also drove a passenger bus from Houma to Grand Caillou for his brother [hard to read] Duplantis. H served [hard to read] chairman for last Fisherman's Festival, the Holy Family Church Fair. He was a World War II veteran and a member of VFW Post 4752. Mrs. Oletta Chatagnier, Grand Caillou news columnist for the Courier and chairwoman of the Fisherman's Festival, said "many people will miss him. He had lots of friends. He was a very friendly man, the mailman for so many years and treated people so nice." Ruffin Martin, Superintendent of Postal Operations in Houma, said that Duplantis "was very aggressive and conscientious and always willing to work". "All the people he served (in Dulac and Grand Caillou) were always very appreciative of him. He went out of his way to serve those people." Visitation began at 10 a.m. today at the Chauvin Funeral Home and will continue until funeral time. The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Chauvin Duplantis; his mother, May Thibodeaux Duplantis; four sons, Ira Jr., Alexander, Yancey and Tyler Duplantis, all of Grand Caillou; three daughters, Mrs. Willie (Donette) Thibodaux, Marcia Duplantis and Mrs. Larry (Rena) Huddleston of Houma; four brothers, Joseph "T- Joe" Duplantis of Houma, Davidson Duplantis of New Orleans, Warner "Dick" Duplantis of Grand Caillou and Earnest Duplantis of New Jersey; three sisters, Mrs. Armand (Mildred) Domangue of Houma, Mrs. Junius (Inez) Duplantis of Grand Caillou, Mrs. R.J. (Mae) Lecompte of Little Caillou; and nine grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Alex Duplantis; and one brother, Herman Duplantis. Chauvin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
