Sep 8, 1982 Herbert Fortson Herbert Willard Fortson Sr., 83, a native of Waskom, Texas and longtime resident of Houma, died 12:15 a.m. Tuesday at Terrebonne General Hospital, after a length illness. He was very involved in First Baptist Church of Houma and served in many capacities, such as deacon for the Sunday School since 1935. He was chairman of the Finance Committee; and Chairman of the Mission Committee, which was instrumental in starting several Baptist churches in the parish. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Plain Dealing, La., since 1929. Visitation will begin 10 a.m. today and continue until 10 p.m. at Chauvin Funeral Home and resume 8 a.m. Thursday until funeral time. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Resthaven Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Baton Rouge. Survivors include his wife, Fannie Parks Fortson; five sons, Herbert Fortson Jr. of Yuba City, Calif., Arthur M. Fortson of Houma, Richard L. Fortson of New Orleans, Charles R. Fortson of Summit, Miss, and Francis "Melvin" Fortson of Eunice, La.; two step-sons, Clayton Guice of Grand Cane, La. and Mack Guice of Keatchie, La.; two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Martha) Bienvenu of Houma and Mrs. John (Wynona) Norman of Baton Rouge; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Nathan (Gloria) Derbonne of Loganport, La. and Mrs. Leon (Sarah) Brown of Sherwood, Ark.; one sister, Mrs. Gaynell Flores of Shreveport; 30 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Hightower and Francis M. Fortson; one brother, Earnest L. Fortson; and two previous wives, Mrs. Estelle Bonnette Fortson and Mrs. Lona Johnson Fortson. Chauvin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
