Submitted by: Chris Tidwell James Hill Wake services have been scheduled for 8 p.m. today at Bell Baptist Church in Raceland for James Hill, 68, who died at 10 p.m. Sunday in Gheens. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sunlight Baptist Church in Gheens with interment in Sunlight Baptist Church Cemetery. Hill was born in Gheens on August 1, 1916 and was known as one of the top cane producers in the area. He served, as an advisory board member with South Louisiana Electric Cooperative and committee member on the Cooperative Extension Service, was master mason of the St. Joseph Lodge No. 15 and an active deacon and treasurer of the Sunlight Baptist Church in Gheens. He was awarded numerous honors for sugar production from the parish Farm Bureau and the American Sugar Cane League and was known as "Mr. Sucrose" to his fellow sugar cane farmers because of his crop's high sugar content. He was the husband of Bessie Shelby Hill of Brooklyn; father of Barbara Hill Smith of Lockport; adopted son of Marvin Washington of Gheens and Audrey Armant of Raceland; and the brother of Mertha Hill and Gladys Thompson, both of Gheens, Doretha Brown and Jessie Hill, both of New Orleans. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jefferson Hill and Laura Robinson Hill; and a brother Edward Hill.
