All rights reserved. ********************************************** Note: This file has been divided into sections representing DATE OF DEATH Because of the method of reporting at that time, only the DAY of burial is given, not the DATE. ============================================================================= FEB 20 1990 Whitney Martinez Local hospital commissioner dies at 85Whitney Charles Martinez, a member of the Thibodaux Hospital and Health Centers Board of Commissioners for 21 years, died Tuesday.Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Chackbay for Martinez, 85, a native and resident of Chackbay, who died at 8:45 p.m.Visitation will be tonight at the church from 6-10 and Thursday 8 a.m. until funeral time. Interment will be in the church cemetery.Martinez was the husband of Olympe Constant Martinez; father of Dennis W. Martinez, Charles V. Martinez, Gerald J. Martinez, Sylvia Himel and Eldred Durocher; and brother of Laurencia Martinez. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Martinez; sisters, Lovinia Torez and Vicotria Lorio; brothers, P. Davis Martinez, Clovis Edwin Martinez and Eddie Martinez.Martinez worked as a health sanitarian for about 30 years; first for the Lafourche Parish Health Department and then for the State Department of Health. He inspected seafood from Grand Isle to Lake Charles. He retired in 1970.He served on the hospital board since 1970 assisting in the planning of the facility and remaining active on the board until his death.Other hospital board members include: Parish President Vernon F. Galliano, Attorney John Pugh; Dr. Paul T. Gaudet and consultant Warren Authement.Along with the hospital board, Martinez was active in his community.He was on the building committee for Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church before it was constructed in 1951. He remained active in his church as a Eurcharistic minister and usher. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society.Martinez received the St. Louis Medal of Honor in New Orleans and the Bishop's Medal of Honor for the Houma/Thibodaux Diocese for his service to the Catholic Church.Landry's Funeral Home in Thibodaux is in charge of the arrangements. =============================
