He was 85. Gros, a native of Choupic and a resident of Thibodaux, opened Percy's Restaurant in 1933. He began working in the cane fields around Thibodaux when he was 12. After three years in the cane fields, he left home and went to work at Born's Restaurant. That location is now the Lafourche district attorney's office. Gros began at Landry's as a dishwasher, but worked his way up until he was handling purchases and managing employees. He left Landry's along with three others and rented the restaurant that is now Percy's located at 407 Green St. Three years later, he bought the restaurant. He continued running the restaurant until 1978 when he turned over control to his son Louis. Although he longer managed the restaurant, Percy Gros continued to work in it. During a May interview, Percy Gros said, "I wouldn't be surprised if this is the oldest restaurant (still open) in Lafourche. It's the oldest in Thibodaux, I know." Gros had been very active in the Thibodaux Fire Department. When he was 18, he joined Protector Company Number 2. In 1973, Protector gave him a reception to recognize his 50 years of service and was a lifetime exempt member. He was grand marshal of the 1951 Thibodaux Fireman's Fair. He was the father of Percy Jr., Louis, Thomas, Harley, Leo and Arline Gros, Noella Landreneau and Linda Links; and brother of Harry Gros. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Mae Chiasson; parents, Thomas and Eulicia Benoit Gros; three brothers, Dalmas, Albon and Roland Gros. A funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. Visitation is 5-10 p.m. today at the church and 8 a.m. until funeral time Wednesday.
