Mrs. Eugenie Smith and family left last Sunday for Gretna, where
they willreside.
=====================
Miss Martha Thompson,
of Lexington, Ky., is the guest of Miss Alma Roger, on Home Cottage
plantation.
=====================
Miss Nellie M. Lagreze, who
resides above Thibodaux, is spending sometime in New Orleans.
=====================
We regret to hear that Mr. Eugene
Fleetwood, one of the deputies in Sheriff Beary's office, has been
critically ill since last Sunday.
=====================
Mr.
Oleus Mire, the Baker man (or rather one of our former citizens, who
now resides at Baker, La., was in Thibodaux last Saturday.
=====================
Mr. E. Finkelstein was called to New
Orleans this week on account of the serious illness of his mother.
We trust that the lady will soon be restored to health.
=====================
Mr. Edward Morris, road inspector from the
second district, and Mr. Walter Parra, road inspector from the third
district of this parish, were both in Thibodaux this week, being
here, doubtless, to tell the grand jury why the roads are dry in dry
weather and why they are muddy in rainy weather.
=====================
A letter and also a dollar bill came to us
yesterday morning from Mr. Thos. Legendre, at Beaumont, Texas. The
dollar says nothing (merely looks at us smilingly) but the letter
tells us that Mr. Legendre is "still doing fine here". We are glad
to hear it and hope that he will continue to do well.
=====================
Mrs. and Mrs. Jos. Wink had the pleasure
last week of entertaining Mrs. Amelia Smith, Grand Guardian of the
Woodmen of the State, and Mrs. W. F. Short and Mrs. C. W. Abbott,
also ardent members of the Ladies Circle. After spending several
days pleasantly here the three ladies returned to their homes in
Algiers.
=====================
We had a pleasant call last
Monday from Mr. Argus J. Bourgeois, who resides a short distance
below Lafourche Crossing.
=====================
Mr. Bourgeois
called to pay his subscription to the Comet. He is one of the
farmers of the lower section of this parish who intend to be guided
by the agricultural information that Mr. H. J. David can so capably
convey.
=====================
Mr. Henry J. Bergeron, who is
one of the farmers residing near Lafourche Crossing, dropped in to
see us last Saturday just after the farmers meeting at the Court
House. Mr. Bergeron, who left us a dollar to settle for his Comet,
seems to be very enthusiastic over the ideas and suggestions thrown
out by Messrs. Perrin and David, the agricultural agents. He said
that he would be glad to see a farmers organization formed in his
part of the parish.
=====================
Very Rev. Father A.
M. Barbier and his guest, Rev. Father A. Simon, of New Orleans, had
a little automobile experience last Thursday that they will not soon
forget. Father Barbier was spinning along the Church Avenue or First
street when his car began to lurch from one side of the road to the
other. He tried to aright it, but the road was rather slippery and
before he could get the machine steadied it had capsized with both
occupants, who, fortunately were uninjured.The windshield through
which Father Barbier crawled out of the car, was smashed and the top
was considerably damaged. We congratulate the two estimable priests
upon their narrow escape. The Lord was certainly with them. After
the mishap it was discovered that two inner tubes, both on the same
side, had bursted thus causing the car to turn over.
=====================
Rev. Father J. J. Rousseau, pastor of St.
Jules; church, at Belle Alliance, near Donaldsonville, after a brief
visit in the city, will leave this morning for his home parish.
Father Rousseau is one of the best-known priests in the diocese,
having spent many years in the city, administering the affairs of
the various churches. He was formerly assistant to the late Bishop
Rouxel and was also connected with St. Michael's church. He was
administrator at Thibodaux for several months, and was then
appointed pastor of Belle Alliance, where he succeeded in building a
modern church in that parish. N. O. Picayune.
=====================
Mr. Onezippe Braud, whose home was near St.
Bridget's Church, near Schriever, died last Sunday morning, aged 65
years, his demise being due to heart failure. Mr. Braud was a native
of Lafourche parish, having been born 9 miles below Thibodaux, but
for 39 years he had been a resident of Terrebonne, where he had
succeeded quite will in life. He is survived by his wife and his
son, his daughter having died 10 years ago in Beaumont, Texas. His
body was brought to Thibodaux Monday forenoon and laid to rest in
St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.

New Orleans, LA,
April 22, 1918
Mr. John B. Taylor, Thibodaux, La.
Dear Sir
- Will you kindly forward my Comet to New Orleans, La., 632 Peters
Ave.
There is quite a difference in New Orleans now from a few
years back. Work is very plentiful and wages are very good. I an
sorry to say that I am now a cripple, being laid up at the
Presbyterian Hospital. I had the misfortune of stepping on a ship
spike during the beginning of last week, which nearly went through
my left foot. I am very fortunate, however, as my company bears all
expenses at the hospital until I am well. I expect to return to my
work in a few days.
Yours truly,
Leonce Riviere

It's been sometime since the young people of
Thibodaux and vicinity had as enjoyable a dance as the one that took
place last Friday night in the old Woodmen hall. The committee in
charge - composed of Messrs Edward Naquin, H. L. Sims and G. P. Pugh
- had much reason to be gratified over the result.
===================
Mr. Victor E. Fremin, his wife and daughter,
of Labadieville, were in Thibodaux last Saturday. Mr. Fremin had the
Comet editor in mind when he started for Thibodaux, for he brought
us some new Irish potatoes and a mess of fine snap beans. He has a
40 acre farm, but like other farmers, is having a tussle for want of
laborers. He is compelled to do the most of his work himself, but
this has not had a depressing effect upon him physically, for he
displays a rosy complexion and a muscular build that any man should
prize. We told him he need not worry so much about the shortage of
labor, because we had seen it stated that the business men of
Napoleonville had agreed to close their places on "wheatless days,"
Mondays and Wednesday, and give the farmers a helping hand. He was
glad to hear this, he said, but he hoped that the Napoleonville
merchants would not gain agricultural knowledge by doing as the
fellow who had been sent into a cabbage patch to "clean it up." When
the owner went to inspect the garden he found that the fellow had
"cleaned it up" so well as to not leave a plant standing having
acted the part of the "man with the hoe" just a little too well.

TRIBUTE TO DARCUS BELONEY TAYLOR
Source: Times Picayune November 13, 1997

For 96 Years November 13, 1997 Darcus Beloney Taylor is the kind of hero you seldom hear about, but she made a big difference in her little corner of the world. Her funeral in Houma Monday morning was more tribute than tribulation and a time for remembering. "If you didn't know her before, you knew her after," granddaughter Cynthia Hunt said. "They gave her a grand ceremony." She died Nov. 5 at 96, but she lives on in three sons, six daughters, 35 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, 52 great-great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-great-grandchildren. I met the Taylor clan in March 1996 when they came home to Houma from all over the New Orleans area and beyond in honor of Mrs. Taylor's 95th birthday.
It was a huge celebration that spilled out of the house into a sunny backyard rich with the smells of chicken cooking and the sounds of children playing. The combination birthday party, family reunion and group christening for the youngest Taylors was Cynthia's idea. She wanted to do something special for the grandmother who had raised her, and she wanted to show the children what a family is all about. "I want them to understand sharing and taking care of each other and caring about each other," she said.
*** Values at grandma's knee ***
Cynthia learned her values from her grandmother: Love God and value education. "You knew that Sunday you were going to church and Monday you were going to school," she said. Maybe the reason a good education was so important to Cynthia's grandmother was that she and her husband never had an opportunity to get much of one themselves. But they worked. Johnny Taylor Sr. worked for Shell Oil in Houma for 38 years and he was a master carpenter. Mrs. Taylor gardened and baked and sewed for her family and taught her children what was important in life. Cynthia never knew that they were poor. When she was a little girl, she had a wonderful wardrobe thanks to her grandmother's baking. An empty cloth flour sack with a colorful pattern on it always meant a new outfit. "She would call me in from playing, and I'd take a bath, and by the time I was finished, I had a brand new little short set," Cynthia said.
From family to community It was more than family at the funeral Monday morning. Friends, community leaders and church members showed up at New Mount Zion Baptist Church to pay their respects, too. "It was beautiful," Cynthia said. "A big old church with an upstairs section packed to the rafters." When Mrs. Taylor's husband died in 1992, they had been married for 73 years. Together they started the first black Boy Scout Troop in Houma and saw to it that the black kids in town had a playground to play on.
They always gave freely of everything they had: good meals, good words, helping hands. Mrs. Taylor had great faith and was active in her church as a Sunday School teacher, a member of Eastern Star for 57 years and president of the Senior Choir. Monday afternoon was a time for telling all the old stories, for reminiscing and smiling at the memories.
Cynthia has two grandsons of her own now. She tells her son and daughter they can keep their great-grandmother's spirit alive by sharing their memories of her with their babies. And she intends to see that they do it. "We were blessed and we know it," she said. "I thank God for the 96 years she was here."
