Larry Gene Cox, Madison
Parish, Louisiana
May 4, 1952 ~ January
17, 2020 (age 67)
From Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home January 19, 2020
Sheriff Larry Gene Cox, 67, went to be
the Lord on Friday, January17, 2020. Born May 4, 1952, Larry was a native of
Tallulah where he dedicated his entire adult life to serving the public with a
kind and generous heart. He was elected sheriff of Madison Parish in 1996 and
held that office for 24 years during which he was a member and past president
of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association, serving on many executive committees.
Despite the many accolades he received in his career, he was the proudest of
the trust the people of Madison Parish placed in him year after year as they
recognized his genuine compassion of them and his willingness to lend a helping
hand. His office door was always open to those in need, who sought advice, or
just wanted a sympathetic listener. So many Madison Parish residents can recall
a time when they turned to Larry, knowing he would do what he could to help. He
ran a well-trained department much appreciated by the parish and considered his
deputies and staff as extended members of his family.
Faced with serious
heath challenges, Larry chose not to run for re-election in 2019, but vowed to
remain an active part of the community. He was a devoted member of the First
Baptist Church of Tallulah, where he was a great “behind the scenes” supporter.
He loved his Men’s Sunday School Class, but most importantly, he showed a
genuine faith in Jesus Christ.
Larry is survived by
his loving wife of 46 years Carolyn Givens Cox and his cherished children Brian
Cox and Erin Cox Busby and husband Ryman and grandson, Ryder to whom he was a
doting “PawPaw”. He also is survived by his sister
Kathy Cox Grady and numerous nieces and nephews. Always the dedicated family
man, Larry eagerly looked forward to regular lunch and family time at Nana’s
house.
Larry was preceded in
death by his grandparents – Pauline
and Ira
Everhart, and Arlie
and Lucille Cox,
his parents Armon B. Cox and Dorothy Everhart
Cox, and brothers, Charles Cox and
Keith Cox.
Funeral services for
Sheriff Larry Cox will be Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. at the First
Baptist Church of Tallulah with Rev. Anthony R. Bridgewater and Bro. Craig West
officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:30 P.M. in the church. Due to road
conditions, burial at Memorial Park Cemetery will be a private service for
family only under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are
Jackie Varner, Bobby Todd, Glen Guimbellot, Todd Beene, Trey Varner, Chad Morgan, Ronnie Parker, and Edwin
Moberly.
Honorary pallbearers
are Madison Parish Sheriff Deputies.
In lieu of flowers,
the family has requested donations be made in Larry’s memory at St. Jude
Children’s Hospital, MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas or First Baptist
Church of Tallulah.

Madison Parish Sheriff
Larry Cox died Friday following a fall at his home.
Cox, age 67, had been
battling cancer for the past year and was transported to a Vicksburg hospital
after he fell around 8 a.m.
Chief Deputy Sammie
Byrd said Cox hit his head when he fell, but was talking after the incident. He
later died at the hospital.
Byrd is the
sheriff-elect for Madison Parish and was appointed to the chief deputy position
in recent weeks by Cox. Cox did not seek re-election in the most recent
sheriff's race.
Byrd described Cox as
a long-time friend Friday and said he was shocked by the sudden death.
"He was a
prankster to say the least, and he was very popular in the community,"
Byrd said. "He had very little trouble being re-elected for additional
terms when he ran. That speaks for itself."
On Friday afternoon,
deputies from the Madison Parish Sheriff's Office were traveling to Vicksburg
to return Cox's body to the parish.
Byrd said Cox grew up
in Madison Parish and was a good student and athlete. He attended Louisiana
State University and later returned to his home.
In a provided
statement, the Northeast Louisiana Ambulance Service said Cox was a man who
earned the loyalty of his many friends."Devoted to his family, friends and
community, he was a man who loved Madison Parish, and Madison Parish loved
him," the statement read. "A friend, a family man, beloved sheriff
and pillar of Madison Parish, he spent his life taking care of its people. But
he wouldn't have had it any other way. His passing is a tremendous loss. The
ambulance service mourns the loss of Sheriff Cox. Our thoughts and prayers are
with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time."
For 10 years he
worked as an investigator for the District Attorney's office and later ran for
sheriff. His first term started July 1, 1996.
Cox was married to
Carolyn G. Cox.
