Near Delhi, W.M. Man Killed, Wife, 3 Children Hurt In Accident

Delhi, Nov. 19 – A West Monroe man was killed about 9 p.m. Saturday in a two-car head-on collision 3.5 miles south of Delhi on the Crowville-Winnsboro road, just over the line in Franklin Parish.

Truman W. Chapman, of West Monroe, was dead on arrival at the Delhi Clinic, according to State Trooper James C. Martin, of Tallulah, investigating officer. With Chapman were his wife and three children, all of who received lacerations and bruises and were given emergency treatment at the Delhi Clinic before being removed to a Monroe hospital. Worst injured was Michael B. Chapman, 6, who suffered severe lacerations on the right face, possible fractured jaw, mild brain concussion and ruptured spleen, Trooper Martin said. He was unconscious when taken from the scene of accident.

Driver of the other car, a taxi, identified by the trooper as James Bearden, of Route 1, Delhi who was alone. The officer said Bearden suffered severe lacerations on the head and face and severe bruises on the chest.

Other Chapman children injured were Peggy, 17, who suffered a fractured jaw, deep lacerations on left cheek and left ear partially cut off and James H., 14, possible ribs broken and possible fracture of the left knee joint, Martin said. Mrs. Chapman received bruises and small cut on left arm and a cut on a leg, according to the trooper.
