Subject: Dortch of Ouichita Parich. LA
Robert Dortch settled in Ouachita Parish in West Monroe, La. near Bayou De Siard. Robert Dortch was a member of the Western Star Masonic Lodge 24 in the 1860's. He died near Oxford, Mississippi, on December 4, 1869, at age 40. He was born about 1829. He married Mary Bethune Martin, the daughter of John Bethune Martin of Moore County, NC and Nancy Hill Harris of Montgomery County, NC. Robert Dortch and Mary Bethune Martin were married before 1861 in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi as per LDS Patron Sheets.

While in Raleigh at the State Archives, I found a book by Daniel Allan McDonald that said that John Bethune Martin was living with his daughter, Mary Bethune Martin, in Monroe, LA, when he died. The book also stated her husband was "a wealthy planter named Robert Dortch" whose family was from NC.

My true quest is to find the location of Robert Dortch's burial and, hopefully, the date of death, will and tombstone of his father-in-law, John Bethune Martin. Any names, dates and places anyone could share on the Dortch Family in Ouchita Parish, LA would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Fredreica speyer@bellsouth.net

Looking for any possible family information on Benjamin C. ELLIS (b. NC 1910) and Charity FIELDS (b. TN 1912). I have found many "Benjamin Ellis"es, but none married to a Charity. Also seeking info on their son George H. ELLIS, b. 1845 Mississippi, Sergeant with Co. I, 5th LA Cavalry on Confederate side. Paroled on 12 Jun 1865 at Monroe LA, 12 Jun 1865. All else I know about him is that he married a "Nettie".

Subject: Mathew and Annie Johnson family of Bosco La.
I'm researching the genealogy of my gr gr maternal grandparents, Mathew and Annie Johnson who were married after the Civil war and lived in Bosco La. According to family rumor, Mathew was Irish and Annie was Indian (tribe unknown) Prior to marriage she lived in a local Indian village. They had several children, one of which was my grandfather Nathaniel Johnson. Among his siblings was John, Bud, (maybe a nickname) Ophelia, Bert and maybe others. Nathaniel Johnson married Luvonia Racy Johnson. Their children were Willie, Orell (my mother) Ethel Lee, Nathan, Evora, Leamon (who played baseball in the Negro League) and Annie. Nathaniel moved his family to Crossett Arkansas. All information regarding the Johnson family heritage and the burial site of Mathew, Annie, Nathaniel and Luvonia Johnson will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Nathan and Rebecca Thornton
Nathan Thornton was born ca. 1833 in Louisiana. His wife, Rebecca, was born ca. 1836 in Mississippi. I believe they had at least 8 children:
John born 1859 in La; Sarah born 1862 in La; Mariah born 1864 in La; Polly born 1866 in La; Rose born 1868 in La; Lizzie born 1870 in La; William born 1872 in La and Alice born 1877 in La.
Nathan and Rebecca are listed in Lincoln Parish on the 1880 census and in Ouachita Parish on the 1870 census. Is anyone else researching this family? Does anyone have any more information on this family? I have heard that Nathan was Indian but the census record lists him as white.

Subject: Reuben Henry Grant Death
I am looking for a public record or obituary of the death of Reuben Henry Grant. He was born 1861 in Georgia and died 15 July 1943, most likely in Ouachita Parish. He and his wife Emma Florence Smith Grant are buried in Antioch Cemetery. The Louisiana State Archives does not him listed in their records from the Louisiana State Department of Health Birth-Death Index. Any suggestions or direction would be appreciated.

Subject: Bernstein/Roberts/Nelson
I am researching the Roberts/Nelson families. Cherry Roberts married Henry Bernstein. Part of her youth and much of her married life was in Winnfield. In 1939 Cherry was living in Monroe. Perhaps also her sister, Ruby Stewart. Henry's parents are buried in Monroe in the Jewish Cemetery. Cherry's parents were Mary Louise Nelson, died & buried in MS, 1888. Her father, John Cherry Roberts died in Winn Parish, 1891. John C. Roberts and Henry Bernstein were both lawyers. Would like to know when/where Cherry and Henry Bernstein died and are buried, their children. Also, where her father is buried. But in particular, I am researching her family in LA, MS, AL, GA and SC. Barbara

Subject: Unmarked Cemetery in Ouachita/Jackson Parish
Does anyone have any idea about an old cemetery that is located on the corner of Hwy 34 and Indian Village Road? My great-great grandparents, Thomas and Susan Cockrell, and buried there and there is a house built over this cemetery site now. Apparently there was no law against desecrating graves before cemeteries had to be registered. There are probably other burials there, and it could be Thomas's siblings. I wonder if the people who own the property now knows of the burials?
