Subject: Dortch of Ouichita Parich. LA
Robert Dortch settled in Ouachita
Parish in West Monroe, La. near Bayou De Siard. Robert Dortch was a member of
the Western Star Masonic Lodge 24 in the 1860's. He died near Oxford,
Mississippi, on December 4, 1869, at age 40. He was born about 1829. He married
Mary Bethune Martin, the daughter of John Bethune Martin of Moore County, NC and
Nancy Hill Harris of Montgomery County, NC. Robert Dortch and Mary Bethune
Martin were married before 1861 in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi
as per LDS Patron Sheets.
While in Raleigh at the State Archives, I found
a book by Daniel Allan McDonald that said that John Bethune Martin was living
with his daughter, Mary Bethune Martin, in Monroe, LA, when he died. The book
also stated her husband was "a wealthy planter named Robert Dortch" whose family
was from NC.
My true quest is to find the location of Robert Dortch's
burial and, hopefully, the date of death, will and tombstone of his
father-in-law, John Bethune Martin. Any names, dates and places anyone could
share on the Dortch Family in Ouchita Parish, LA would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Fredreica speyer@bellsouth.net

Subject: Reuben
Henry Grant Death
I am looking for a public record or obituary of the death
of Reuben Henry Grant. He was born 1861 in Georgia and died 15 July 1943, most
likely in Ouachita Parish. He and his wife Emma Florence Smith Grant are buried
in Antioch Cemetery. The Louisiana State Archives does not him listed in their
records from the Louisiana State Department of Health Birth-Death Index. Any
suggestions or direction would be appreciated.

Subject: Bernstein/Roberts/Nelson
I am
researching the Roberts/Nelson families. Cherry Roberts married Henry Bernstein.
Part of her youth and much of her married life was in Winnfield. In 1939 Cherry
was living in Monroe. Perhaps also her sister, Ruby Stewart. Henry's parents are
buried in Monroe in the Jewish Cemetery. Cherry's parents were Mary Louise
Nelson, died & buried in MS, 1888. Her father, John Cherry Roberts died in Winn
Parish, 1891. John C. Roberts and Henry Bernstein were both lawyers. Would like
to know when/where Cherry and Henry Bernstein died and are buried, their
children. Also, where her father is buried. But in particular, I am researching
her family in LA, MS, AL, GA and SC. Barbara

Subject: Unmarked
Cemetery in Ouachita/Jackson Parish
Does anyone have any idea about an old
cemetery that is located on the corner of Hwy 34 and Indian Village Road? My
great-great grandparents, Thomas and Susan Cockrell, and buried there and there
is a house built over this cemetery site now. Apparently there was no law
against desecrating graves before cemeteries had to be registered. There are
probably other burials there, and it could be Thomas's siblings. I wonder if the
people who own the property now knows of the burials?
