Vacherie man held in murder of neighbor
CONVENT - A 51-year-old Vacherie man was found murdered over the weekend and a neighbor has been charged in his death. Preston Champagne, 22, 2445 Church Lane, Vacherie, is accused of killing Junius Dumas, of 2084 Church Lane, and dumping his body at the edge of the Mississippi River, where it was discovered by St. James sheriff's deputies. Champagne has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held at the St. James Parish Jail under a $150,000 bond, set Monday by Judge Guy Holdridge. Dumas is St. James Parish's first murder victim of 2000. Authorities were notified by Dumas' mother Friday and told she hadn't seen her son since the night before. She said she was alarmed since she usually saw her son once a day. She also told deputies she heard her son may have had a fight with Champagne Thursday. Sheriff Willie Martin Jr. said witnesses had seen two separate fights Thursday night between Champagne and Dumas. The sheriff's department was informed that the fights had accelerated to physical violence and that after the second fight, Dumas had not been seen again. Martin said Champagne was being held for questioning into Dumas' disappearance at the time Dumas's body was found. Champagne had admitted to fighting with Dumas, but has denied knowing where he had gone afterward, said Martin. After an investigation at the scene, evidence found with Dumas's body further linked Champagne to the murder, the sheriff added. Martin would not comment on the nature of the murder, the evidence linking Champagne to the body or the results of an autopsy performed in Baton Rouge.
Martin said the body had been removed from the scene of the murder and dumped in the river. Martin said Champagne is claiming to be innocent and has hired a defense attorney.

She would often be heard quoting "I will lift up my eyes to the hills from where my help comes from.", "The Lord is my Shepherd!", "It's God's will and he will see you through.", and "Tell that devil to get thee behind you!". She was blessed with the gift of song from God and could often be heard singing and just humming the day away. Letitia was educated via the St. James Parish School System from elementary through high school. Upon graduation, she was employed as a cook at Millett (Service Inn) in Vacherie, Louisiana. She later relocated to Edgard, Louisiana where she gained employment at Gill's Bar and Restaurant where she was also a cook. MoMo Tish absolutely loved and found joy in cooking and baking, which she readily shared with family and friends whether it was delivered ready to enjoy, in home lessons, or instructions over the phone. When she was not in the kitchen, she also found happiness in dancing, traveling, playing card games, going to the casino, and most of all spending time with her family and friends. Letitia never met a stranger nor crossed path with anyone who was not drawn to her. Letita's greatest love was perhaps that of simply being a mother. She was a loving and devoted mother to two children: James Anthony and Tina Louise Johnson. She was such an amazing steward over their lives that she was ultimately promoted to grandmother. She was affectionately referred to as MoMo by her grandchildren: Kennedi Alise' and Kolin Antonio Sherrell. But the blessings upon her did not end there, for she was granted yet another promotion…being great grandmother to Marcel Amaree' Randle. On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, God looked around his garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful, as he always takes his best. He knew that you were suffering. He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb so he closed your weary eyelids and said, "Peace be thine." It broke our hearts to lose you but didn't go alone for part of us went with you the day God called you home. At the age of 79, Letitia entered eternal life with her Lord and Savior. She was surrounded by her children and close family friend, Tabatha Joseph. Letitia was greeted and welcomed home by her parents Clement Zeno and Sophie Bush Zeno Joseph, stepfather Albert Joseph, paternal grandparents Philbert and Amelia Zeno, maternal grandparents Felecian and Anna Bush, brothers Oscar Zeno Sr and Raymond Bush. To cherish her memories and continue her legacy are devoted children James Anthony and Tina Louise Johnson; loving grandchildren Kennedi Alise' and Kolin Antonio Sherrell; attentive great grandson Marcel Amaree' Randle; siblings Claudia Moore, Regina Lewis, Gerald Smith, Floyd Bush, Venessa Bush, Pecolia Bush, Lola and Nola Gibson; sister in law Gayle Zeno, and God daughter, Violet Augusta Borne. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. "But we are of good courage and would prefer to be absent from the body and to make our home with the Lord." 2 Corinthians There will be a public gathering of family and friends on Friday, October 20, 2023 from 5-7 pm at Treasures of Life Center for Life Funeral Services, 315 E. Family says teen slain at Carnival was turning life around
MARRERO, LA. - A Westbank carnival became the scene of a deadly shooting Saturday night. Five teens were shot, one fatally, at a carnival located at the intersection of Lapalco Boulevard and Ames Boulevard in Marrero. Dan Walter Kerry, 16, of Marrero, died of a single gunshot wound to the head. His family gathered outside his nearby home Sunday to comfort each other and mourn his loss. "My last words to him was, 'Be careful Dan. Auntie Ice loves you, Dan. I love you so much and I don't know how to exist in a world where you don't.' And Auntie Ice don't know how to do that," said Icesiss Guy, Kerry's aunt. Four teens, ranging from 14 to 18 years of age, were hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries. According to Kerry's family, Kerry was friends with at least some of the other shooting victims, but it's unclear at this point if he knew all of them. Guy said her nephew was in the process of turning his life around, and had just started getting better grades in school. "When he was younger, he was really misunderstood," said Guy. "And sometimes he got picked on and he got a little aggressive. But he grew to understand that those things would give him a turn for the worst." "He took a step back, took a complete turn around moved in the right direction. My nephew wasn't out here in the streets, on the corner, doing things he wasn't supposed to do. He was at a fair. He was at a fair with friends, among other kids his age," added Guy. JPSO officials said they found a number of 9 mm shell casings in an area in which there were hundreds and hundreds of people. They're still searching for the shooter, and a motive. "We do believe the victim may have known the shooter, it's very unfortunate that young adults try to go to these events to try to enjoy themselves, and the moment the shots rang out, the crowd immediately dispersed," said Col. John Fortunato, public information officer for the JPSO. Fortunato said some JPSO officials were working detail for the carnival when they heard some kind of altercation,
immediately followed by gunshots, and called for back-up.

Alvin was baptized on January 16, 2005, at Greater Woodville Baptist Church by Pastor Mark Nelson, Sr. He was a faithful Sunday worship and Bible study member that didn't like to miss church, even through his sickness. He loved God and his pastor. Alvin was united in holy matrimony to his soul mate, Belinda Valentine Travis on March 13, 2005. In this union, one daughter was born, Lorena Mae Travis, or "Poop" as he called her; four additional children were reared, Sandtrell, Peggy, Shelcia, and Jordy. He grew up on the plantation with his parents and siblings. He attended Magnolia High School. During his working years, he he labored at Avondale Shipyard, Fluor Daniel Chemical Plant, Brazan Farms, Trinity Farms, and the Rodrigue's Farm. No doubt, farming was his passion. Alvin was a quiet humble man who enjoyed watching tv, and playing with his grandkids. He embraced the name "PawPaw" with a smile. Alvin leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Belinda Travis; one daughter, Lorena Travis; four bonus children, Sandtrell (Stacy) Broden, Peggy Valentine, Shelcia (Kyrin) Carter, and Jordy Valentine (Aisha); one brother, Kenneth Travis; two sisters, Jamesetta Travis and Barbara Travis Steib; Godmother, Gloria LeeNaquin; Godchildren, Tyler Broden, Barry Batiste, and Jovanna Joseph Banks; devoted cousins, Raymond and Joycelynn Jack, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
