VACHERIE - James "Jim" Chenier Sr., 70, a native and resident of Vacherie, died March 26. He was the husband of Loretta L. Chenier. He is survived by four sons Arlan, Glen, Carl, and James Chenier, two daughters Nora Morris and Cindy Dupre. He is also survived by four brothers, one sister, 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter Flora.

Edwin "Menew" Gravois, a native and lifelong resident of Vacherie passed away on December 3, 2014 at the age of 79. Born on October 18, 1935, he was an avid sports fan of the LSU Tigers, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. He was a carpenter by trade and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was also the Quartermaster for VFW Post 4245. Known for his wit, he enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, attending sporting events involving his grandchildren, doing carpentry work, and watching sports on TV. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Dolores Clement Gravois; his four children, Darla Hymel (Danny), Wanda Bolton (Will), Carl Gravois (Andrea), and Brent Gravois (Stacie); six grandchildren, Drake Gravois, Lance Hymel, Colby Bolton, Logan Gravois, Layne Hymel, and Demi Gravois; three siblings, Ann Granier, Virginia Laiche, and Allen Gravois. He is preceded in death by his parents, Effie Steib Gravois and Felix Joseph Gravois; five siblings, Mildred Webre, Lydia Labat, Raymond Gravois, Phillip Gravois, and Francis Gravois. He also love to reminisce about his old high school days at C.H.S. of Donaldsonville. Ruth S. Gravois passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 2, 2010. She was 95. Mrs. Gravois was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Gravois, to whom she was married for 56 years. She had been a resident of Thibodaux and other communities in Louisiana for 65 years. Mrs. Gravois was born In Cleveland, Ohio, on Aug. 13, 1914. She attended public schools there and graduated from Glenville High School in 1932. During the Great Depression, she held jobs in Cleveland and Mansfield, Ohio, and contributed to the support of her family. Ruth and Ernest Gravois married in 1944 at an Air Force base in Myrtle Beach, N.C., where Ernest was stationed as a noncommissioned officer in World War II. After the war, they moved to Louisiana. Ruth worked for a number of years for J. Ray McDermott, as did her husband. They made many trips to Cleveland to visit with her family. She is survived by a sister in the Cleveland area and a brother who resides in Washington, D.C. as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. They are grateful for the unstinting care given by the Gravois family,
particularly Jackie and Dewey Gravois, and other care providers in Ruth's last years.

Clarence J. Guidry Sr., a retired plant manager for Universal Match Factory, died Sunday of cancer at Chalmette Medical Center. He was 72. Mr. Guidry was born in New Orleans and lived in Arabi for 43 years. He was a former employee of John Mansville Textile and Roofing Co. He was a member of the Cajun French Music Association, New Orleans Chapter. Survivors include his wife, Anne Hilda Reulet Guidry; two sons, Clarence J. Guidry Jr. and Lonnie J. Guidry; a brother, Leroy Guidry; two sisters, Betty Gulino and Doris Springer; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. David Zaccheous Harris Jr. entered his final resting place on November 4, 2021, at the tender age of 16. He was affectionately known, such as, Dave, DJ, David Jr., Dada, and Ploon. David was a gentle giant, who was a kind, loving, humble, and quiet and was a student at both, Lutcher and St. James High Schools, Class of 2024. He was a native of Gramercy, LA, and a resident of Vacherie, LA. Herbert Harry, Sr. was born on April 18, 1931 in Vacherie, La. to the late Bievenue & Mary Keller Harry. He acknowledged his faith and believed in Jesus as a catholic at an early age. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church parish. He was married to the late Aldonia Simon Harry, and to this union two children were born Martha Harry Steib & the late Herbert Harry, Jr. His last place of employment was at Avondale Shipyard where his job title was a rigger for many years until he retired. Herbert enjoyed sports, especially hardball. His ability and knowledge of baseball almost landed him a position in the professional baseball league, but his mother wouldn't let him go. Herbert loved to dance with his family and friends and created his own dance called the shavol. Herbert is survived by his daughter Martha Steib (Terrance), son Darryl Favorite, Charlene William (Leo), one brother: Milton Harry Sr., two sisters: Eva Batiste (Davis) & Anita H. Batiste, one daughter-in-law, Barbara Harry, two sisters-in-law, Marie V. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all who benefited from his kindness and compassion.

VACHERIE - Francis Conrad Inness, 74, a native and resident of Vacherie, died Oct. 12. He was the father of Cindy Waguespack, and the late Sonia Gravois. He was also the son of the late Rose McGowan Simon and John Inness, and brother of Emerante Triche and Elizabeth "Betty" Tabor, and the late John "Mac" and Tracy Inness. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren. He was a production manager at Universal Match in St. Rose for more than 30 years and is a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Memorial services were Oct. 14 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Vacherie, with interment at the church cemetery.

Ethel Carter Isom, 86, a native of Vacherie and resident of Garyville, died Sept. 17, 2002. She was the daughter of the late Willie and Lillie Carter and the wife of the late Murphy Isom Sr. Mrs. Isom was the mother of Lillie Hollins, Theresa Devare, Irma Melanion, Ethel Mae Champagne, Juanita Lee, Elaine Sterling, Mary Isom, Eva Isom, Murphy Isom Jr., Harold Isom, Herman Isom, Wallace Isom and Alex Isom and the late Vernita Anderson, Edison Isom, and Willie Isom. She is also survived by 49 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church in Boonville, IN. She retired from Alcoa after 35 years of service. Mary was preceded in death by daughter, Paulette M.Jenkins, in 2010; parents, Antoine and Claudia Laurent Baptiste; brothers, Raymond Baptiste, Sidney Baptiste, Claude Baptiste, and Cleveland Baptiste; and sister, Octavia Baptiste Harry.

Theresa Johnson passed away peacefully, after a short illness, at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. She was born and raised in St. James Parish and was a 1964 Magnolia High School graduate. She continued her educational endeavours and obtained her BA degree from Southern University in 1970 and a MS degree at LSU in 1976. She took additional coursework at Dillard University and Nicholls State University. Theresa was the oldest child born to the late Paul, Sr. and Theresa Isom Oubre and was the loving wife of the late Robert Johnson for 36 years. Theresa will forever be remembered by her family, friends, colleagues, and countless number of students whose lives were impacted by her courageous and compassionate teaching style. 'Ms. Tee' as she was known by her students, loved teaching and sharing her knowledge, and her efforts resulted in her being named Junior High Teacher of the Year in 1976. Other highlights of her career included securing funds to take her junior high class on a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the White House in celebration of the United States bicentennial. She also had the opportunity to pilot a plane as the culminating activity of an aerospace flight class at Nicholls State University.
Theresa was an active parishioner of OLOP Catholic Church. She was a member of the KPC Ladies Auxiliary Court #161. She was a member of the OLOP gospel choir and served as an eucharistic minister and a religion education teacher for over 15 years. Theresa was passionate about her career as an educator and was active in the LEA and NEA and served as president of the St James Parish association of educators. She was a past president of the St. James Parish School Library association, PTA president, and treasurer of the St. James Parish School employees credit union. Theresa was an active member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit #0565 where she served as a past president and area commander. She was a member of Le Chapeau Eight and Forty Foundation, Salon 114 which supports children with ongoing chronic illnesses. Her commitment to children led to her role as a girl scouts troop leader and boy scouts den mother. She leaves to cherish her memories children Alichia J. White and Aaron C. Johnson (Barbara); grandchildren Brandon White, Bethany White, Terry White, Jr, Deniscia Butler, Keisha Boyd (Walter), Tonya Roberts (Christopher), and Theodore Robinson; brothers Paul B. Oubre Jr. and Francis 'Packy' Oubre (Aggie); brother-in-law Rodney Johnson (Alinda); sisters-in-law Carolyn Henry, Patricia Harris, Celester Johnson, and Vernadine Oubre; 15 great grandchildren, 5 godchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. Louis (Buddy) Joseph Kraemer of Vacherie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Folse Kraemer, his mother Mable Rodrigue Fank and six children and their spouses: Melissa and Mark Hymel of New Roads, Patricia and Albert Falgoust, Michael and Annette Kraemer, James and Lorna Kraemer, Edward and Jenny Kraemer and Susan and Ryan Oubre all of Vacherie. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Nicole and husband Aaron Guitreau, Jacob, Isabella and MaryBeth Oubre, Cari, Colby, Hunter, Seth, Andrew and Sophie Kraemer, and Elizabeth and Sammy Hymel. Survived also by his sister Verina Kraemer Bourg. He was preceded in death by his father Wilbur V. Gertrude R.P. Oubre, a retired schoolteacher, died Aug. 30 of natural causes at Riverlands Health Care Center in Lutcher. She was 94. Mrs. Oubre was born in Lutcher and lived in Vacherie. Survivors include three daughters, Imelda O. Gros of Vacherie, Jeanne O. Armstrong of New Orleans and Gertrude O. Douglas of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two sons, Jerome F. Oubre of Washington, D.C., and Wilbert J. Oubre Jr. of Capital Heights, Md.; a stepdaughter, Lillie O.D. Rowe of Marrero; three sisters, Dora P. Ford and Daisy P. Morgan of New Orleans and Florence B. Payne of Lutcher; 24 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. SOUTH VACHERIE - Gertrude R.P. Oubre, 94, a native of Lutcher and resident of South Vacherie, died Aug. 30. She was the wife of the late Wilbert Oubre Sr., mother of Imelda Gros, Jeanne Armstrong, Gertrude Douglas, Jerome and Wilbert Oubre Jr. and stepmother of Lillie Rowe and the late Wilfred "Bobby" Oubre. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Brown Payne and sister of Dora Ford, Daisy Morgan, Florence Payne and the late Melvina Hall, Sarah Turead, Olivia Cureau and Aaron, George, Louis and Daniel Payne. She is survived by 24 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandchild.
She was a retired schoolteacher. Services are today at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, South Vacherie, with interment at the church mausoleum. Visitation starts at 8 a.m.

Bienvenu Rome Passes Away at Son's Residence
Bienvenu Rome, a farmer by occupation, died at the residence of his son, Allen Rome, in Port Barrow, Wednesday of last week, at 3:40 p.m, after an illness of six weeks. He was 63 years, 1 month and 16 days old. The funeral, with Landry and Ourso, funeral directors in charge, took place the net dat at 3 p.m.. Services were held at the Smoke Bend Catholic church and interment was in the Vacherie Catholic cemetery. He leaves three sons, Allen Rome, Camille Rome and Curtis Rome, all of this place; four brothers, Mack Rome of Golden Meadow, George Rome of Houma, Septime Rome and Leonce Rome,
both of New Orleans; one sister, Mrs. Septime Leroux of New Orleans, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sylvester Rome (nee Mary Augusta Duhon) are 87, a native of St. James parish, who died at her son's home in Houma Monday, February 27, at 11:15 a.m. were held at the 9:00 a.m. requiem mass at the St. Francis de Sales church in Houma, Tuesday. She was visiting her son, Mr. George Rome, Sr., when she was suddenly stricken. Surviving her are five sons, Bienvenue, Leonce, Mack, Septime and George and her daughter, Mrs. Septime Leroux. She is also survived by thirty-seven grandchildren, and twenty (sic) grandchildren.
Interment was in the St. Frances de Sales cemetery (sic) at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Falgout Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Earl "John the Baptist" Roussel, age 72, retired business owner and resident of Des Allemands, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008, from complications following heart surgery. He was born in Edgard, Louisiana, on June 20, 1936, and was the son of the late George Paul Roussel, Sr. and Josephine Berthelot Roussel. Earl graduated as valedictorian of Edgard High School in 1954. He received the American Legion Award and was honored as a scholar-athlete. He served as a paratrooper and mechanic in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division from 1956 through 1958, and was stationed in Germany. After fifteen years serving as an electrician at Monsanto Corporation, he opened his own refrigeration, electrical, and HVAC company in Luling in the 1970's, Roussel Refrigeration & Air Conditioning. He will be dearly missed by his family. He is survived by his wife, Regina Rivero Roussel. He is also survived by his four beloved children. Earl was preceded in death by a son, David Allen Roussel. He was previously married to Peggy Labat Roussel, now Peggy Labom. Earl was an avid golfer, fisherman, outdoorsman, and happy winner of a Tarpon Rodeo prize for landing an enormous tuna. He loved treating family and friends to crab-boil feasts at his two-story deck on Bayou Gauche. His love and kindness will be with us always. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, at 15405 Highway 90 in Paradis, Louisiana. The funeral mass service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, also at St. John's Church.
The burial will occur at a later date at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church mausoleum in South Vacherie, Louisiana.

Clifton Joseph Saul, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at the age of 79 at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. He was a resident of Vacherie. Husband of the late Hazel A. Saul. Son of the late Etienne and Irma James Saul. Father of Audrall (Stanford) Wooden, Nadine Saul, Clifton (Carnetta) Saul, Jr. and Angela (Stephone) Sharrett. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 3 uncles, one aunt, one sister- in- law, 4 brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was also preceded in death by one sister Mary Esther Dumas and one brother-in-law. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church,

Irma Saul, 87, native and resident of Vacherie, died April 23. She was the wife of the late Ettienne G. Saul and mother of Mary Dumas Saul Dumas and Clifton Joseph Saul Sr. She was also the daughter of the late Willie and Mathilda James and sister of Laura Isom, Eloise Wilson and the late Heedly, Wilson and Joseph James, Victoria Lewis and Bernard, Emily and Esperence Dumas.
She is survived by 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. Services were held April 28 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Vacherie, with interment in the church cemetery.
