Charles Maurice Gravois, Sr.

Charles Maurice Gravois, Sr., age 95, of Vacherie, Louisiana passed away on October 25, 2023. He was born in Vacherie on June 23, 1928, to Ozane J., Sr. and Louise Brazan Gravois and was the youngest son in a family of 13 children. He was raised on Blackberry Farms, and in turn raised his family on the same farm. Sugarcane farming was his life's work. His work on the family farm was interrupted in 1950 by military service. He fought in the Korean War during 1952. Upon his return, he gave his medals and unit citations to his mother, and the next day he returned to working on the farm. He settled into life that revolved around his family, the farm, and his Catholic faith. Charles and Mary Jane Schexnayder of St. James, LA were married on June 25, 1955. They raised their six children in Vacherie down Blackberry Road and later at their beloved home on Highway 20. Together they enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Canada. Charles had a deep desire to provide for his family and to teach life lessons through hard work, stepping into problems with solutions, and taking responsibility. Toward the end of his life, his work was to care for the love of his life - his wife of 68 years, Jane, a job done with distinction. Charles believed in serving the larger agricultural community such as the Louisiana Farm Bureau where he served on the local board and later the Farm Bureau State Board and a director of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company. Like his father and his sons on the farm, he was a member of the American Sugar Cane League. Throughout his long career in farming, he saw the evolution of the Louisiana sugar industry: from the mule to air-conditioned tractors steered by satellite, and sugarcane varieties from the POJs to the current high-yielding line up. Blackberry Farms is a secondary seed cane station for the area and is a variety test site for the sugarcane variety development program. In his lifetime, sugar yield per acre has doubled twice. His life's work culminated in his selection in 2011 as Louisiana Farmer of the Year. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Ozane and Louise Gravois and siblings Rene Gravois, Guy Gravois, Marie "Della" Gravois, Stella G. Anderson, Denise Gravois, Rita G. Roberts, Lester Gravois, Earl Gravois, Ozane Gravois, Jr., and Marie G. Davidson. Charles is survived by his wife, Jane, his children, Charles M. Gravois, Jr. (Crystal), Dickie Gravois, Kevin Gravois (Cathy), Kenneth Gravois (Marguerite), Gregory Gravois, and Mary G. Gayral (Todd), and his grandchildren Erin G. Mudge (Chris), Renee G. Rossi (Adam), Allison G. Morrison (Brett), Charles Gravois, III (Meryl), Phillip Gravois (Alexis), Sam Gravois (Emily), Lee Gravois, Jamie Gravois, Taylor G. Prevost (Will), Paul Gravois (Kelsey), Kelly Gravois, Mark Gravois (fiancé Michelle), Rebecca Gravois, Rachel Gravois, Stephen Gravois, Victoria Gravois, Megan Gravois, Michael Gayral, Caroline G. Lynch (Edward) and Lauren G. Hymel (Alex). Pa was blessed with 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Rosa G. Songy, and Jackie G. Waguespack as well as many nieces and nephews. Theophile Haydel, Jr.

A band of angels carried Theophile Haydel, Jr. to his eternal home on Wednesday, February 22, 2023. T.J. was the fourth child born to the union of the late Theophile Haydel, Sr. and Priscilla Allen Haydel on December 11, 1961. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, where he served diligently as an usher. T.J. was a native of Wallace, Louisiana and lived most of his adult life in Laplace. Theophile was known to family and friends as "T.J." . .."Cho". . . or "Theo." T.J. was the devoted husband of Dwan Dennis Haydel. He was a loving father to Jada Keyon Haydel and Jalen Thomas Haydel. He was also the grandfather of Kevin LaDay, Jr. T.J. was a proud 1979 graduate of West St. John High School in Edgar, Louisiana. He was a faithful member of the Wallace Indians and believed in serving his community. He participated in numerous community events such as: assisting in building bonfires for Christmas Eve, cooking and serving food at community events and helping to distribute toys during the Annual Toy Drive for kids. First and foremost, T.J. was a family man. He loved his family. Thanksgiving at T.J. and Dwan's house was a big family event. There would be endless food and he made sure that everyone felt right at home. T.J. made the best potato salad which everyone craved and he made good gumbo but it was always spicy!! As in hot, hot, hot!! T.J. was always the life of the party whether he was playing cards, watching football, boiling seafood, or frying fish, T.J. was a character. In addition to his family, T.J. loved the Philadelphia Eagles. Whenever the Eagles played, you would find him dressed in his favorite Eagles jersey or shirt and his Eagles cap or hat, cheering his team on to victory. T. J. loved people and he had a great BIG heart. He and Dwan took care of Dwan's ailing mother until she went home to Glory. Then a few years later, they took T.J.'s ailing mother into their home and cared for her until she transitioned to the Lord. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, T.J. went to the New Orleans Convention Center, despite warnings not to go into the city, to pick up relatives and friends that were stranded there. During the months that followed Hurricane Katrina, T. J. and Dwan opened their home to more than thirty relatives and friends who were displaced because of the storm. Never turning anyone away and always offering hot meals, hot baths, and somewhere to lay their heads for however long they needed to stay. T.J. also helped his relatives in New Orleans toss furniture and remove sheet rock from their homes. He refused to take a dime for his services. After Hurricane Ida, T.J. could be found throughout Laplace helping neighbors to clean up, cutting down trees and doing whatever needed to be done to help someone else. T.J.'s heart was BIG and made of gold. T.J. worked in various plants to provide for his family until his health began to fail this past December. Left to cherish his memories are his devoted wife of 39 years, Dwan; his two children, Jada and Jalen and his grandson Kevin; his brothers, Patrick J. Haydel (Antoinette) and Terrence J. Marie Natalie (Dumas) Steib

Marie Natalie Dumas Steib, daughter of the late Joseph Ephrien Dumas (Eula) and Orelia Mitchel, peacefully entered into eternal rest on April 18, 2023. Natalie was born on November 9, 1924 in Vacherie, Louisiana. She was the cherished sister of Francis Henry and Frank Dumas, Sr., both who preceeded her in death. As an infant, Amelius and Mertilia Oubre Steib lovingly raised Natalie along with siblings in love Coralee S. Mitchell, Eugenia S. Oubre, Joseph C. Steib, Sr., and Lelia S. Oubre all who preceded her in death. She was a devout Catholic and lifelong parishioner at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. On June 7, 1945, Natalie was united in holy matrimony to Joseph B. Steib, Sr. Their union was blessed with six children: Brenda S. Gaignard, Joseph B. Steib, Jr., Leo Steib, Tyrone Steib (Debbie), Janet S. Harrison, and Tracy S. Weldon (Victor). Together, they made sure their children were both nurtured and disciplined. Natalie's greatest pleasure was being an exceptional Mother and Wife, always providing unconditional love. She was truly the family's matriarch. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, mother and father-in-law Baldwin and Eulan Steib, brother and sister-in-laws Audrey Steib Howard (Maceo), James O'Neal Steib, Sr. (Marian), Vincent Steib, Sr. (Cara Mae), Bula and Pierre Steib. Natalie was a member of the Good Children Benevolent Society of Vacherie. She spent countless Fridays and Saturdays at The Hall preparing suppers for many in the community. Natalie enjoyed cooking, sewing, and tending to her family and home. Both family and friends were spoiled with her renowned dishes-spaghetti and meatballs, red and butter beans, liver and onions, stuffed peppers, crawfish stew/bisque, and her famous potato salad-just to name a few. She had a profound love for her nieces and nephews and spent a tremendous amount of time caring for them just as her own. She was affectionately adorned with several names-Mom, MawMaw, Nat, Not, and T-Not. We will miss her dearly sitting in that corner spot on the sofa but take comfort knowing she will reunite with family and close friends she's missed for many, many years. Natalie was truly one of our last great oak trees. We were privileged to have her for 98 ½ years with God by her side throughout her entire life.
