Mary Jane (Schexnayder) Gravois

Mary Jane Schexnayder Gravois, age 91, of Vacherie, Louisiana, passed away on July 9, 2024. She was born on November 27, 1932, to Richard Joseph Schexnayder and Ethel Wilma Sigur Schexnayder as the middle daughter in a family of three sisters. She was raised in St. James where family and friends were always nearby. Of particular importance was Denise Marie Schexnayder Graugnard, "Tetere", her doting grandmother. Grade school was within walking distance for Jane, and her journey as a lifelong learner began there at an early age. Her class was the first to graduate after the twelfth grade; two senior years suited her just fine. After high school, Jane attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Later, she earned a Master of Education degree from Nicholls State University. Education was important to Jane. She retired from teaching after many years in the St. James public school system. New priorities blossomed when Jane met Charles Maurice Gravois, Sr., a sugarcane farmer from Vacherie. Charles and Jane were married at St. James Catholic Church on June 25, 1955. They settled into life that revolved around family, sugarcane farming, and their Catholic faith. They raised six children in Vacherie down Blackberry Road and later at their beloved home on Highway 20. Charles and Jane sacrificed to give their children opportunities for education. Jane's heart had a deep desire to raise and nurture their family and to teach life lessons through hard work, discipline, and church. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were a source of pride and joy. Charles and Jane enjoyed traveling across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Faith and farming were an important part of family life. Jane was committed to her church community and served as a lector at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Vacherie. Because farming was a family business, Jane kept the books for Blackberry Farms. Like her husband Charles, she served the larger agricultural community through the Louisiana Farm Bureau. Jane was preceded in death by her husband Charles M. Gravois, Sr., parents Richard J. and Ethel S. Schexnayder and brothers-in-law Fernand "Bud" J. Falgoust, Jr. and Claude J. Schexnayder, Jr. Jane is survived by her children, Charles M. Gravois, Jr. (Crystal), Dickie Gravois, Kevin Gravois (Cathy), Kenneth Gravois (Marguerite), Gregory Gravois, and Mary G. Gayral (Todd), as well as her grandchildren Erin G. Mudge (Chris), Renee G. Rossi (Adam), Allison G. Morrison (Brett), Charles Gravois III (Meryl), Phillip Gravois (Alexis), Sam Gravois (Emily), Lee Gravois, Jamie Gravois, Taylor G. Prevost (Will), Paul Gravois (Kelsey), Kelly Gravois, Mark Gravois (Michelle), Rebecca Gravois, Rachel Gravois (fiancé Ian), Stephen Gravois, Victoria Gravois, Megan Gravois, Michael Gayral, Caroline G. Lynch (Edward) and Lauren G. Hymel (Alex). Granny was blessed with 15 great grandchildren - Callie, Andre, and Leo Mudge; Vivienne and Camille Rossi; Madison and Reid Morrison; Levi, Rhea, and Elise Gravois; Riley Gravois; Eleanor and Joseph Gravois; and Leighton and Lucas Hymel. Jane is also survived by her cherished sisters Joan S. Falgoust and Joyce S. Schexnayder as well as many nieces and nephews. Jane's family appreciates those who cared for her at Thibodaux Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center and Journey Hospice. Special thanks to a dear friend and fellow resident, Lawrence "Doc" Lirette. His friendship and watchful eye will always be remembered. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Visitation and Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 13281 LA-644, Vacherie, LA on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Visitation will be held at the church from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Paulina, LA. Daniel Joseph Kliebert, Sr.

November 6, 1946 - May 5, 2024
Daniel Joseph Kliebert, Sr. passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at the age of 77. He was a lifelong resident of Lutcher, LA. Beloved husband of Lee Ann Boutte Kliebert, who would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on the 14th of June. Loving father of Daniel Kliebert, Jr. (Megan), Susan Pauli (Michael), and Jeremy Kliebert (Dorie). Grandfather of Pierson Kliebert, Addison Kliebert, Ben Pauli, Ethan Pauli, Andrew Kliebert, and Matthew Kliebert. Son of the late Theodule and Inez Kliebert. Daniel loved hunting and fishing, especially duck hunting and fishing for redfish and specs. He shared many great times with friends and family in duck blinds and boats and he cherished those memories dearly. His love for hunting and fishing was only rivaled by his love for his family, especially his grandchildren. Daniel had many great nicknames, but his favorite was given to him by his grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as "Grumps" or "Grumpy" which grew from their difficulty in saying "Gramps" at young ages. For his grandchildren, Grumpy was a source of wisdom and affection. He loved sharing his knowledge of the outdoors and of all things science with them. He cheered them on at every event they participated in - dance and cheer competitions, baseball, football, basketball, soccer and volleyball games, speech competitions and geography bees - from along the sidelines, across state lines, and from the comfort of his favorite La-Z-Boy. Daniel's memory and spirit will forever live on when his friends and family remember his duck call blowing while hunting, hear his voice telling one of his great jokes or sharing a quip with them, looking to his favorite corner spot in the blind or when sharing those camp meals that included big ol' pots of white beans, and while casting a line from their fishing boats. However, his greatest memory and spirit will forever live on as Grumps or Grumpy through the laughter, successes, and victories of his beloved grandchildren and as Daddy, Dad or Pops to his beloved children. Relative and friends are invited to attend the Visitation and Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2130 Rectory St., Paulina on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, Paulina, LA.

Ella Mary (Young) Roberts

In the wise providence of God, 87 years ago, in the town of Lutcher, LA, Ella Mary Young Roberts was born to the parentage of Edward and Lottie Booker Young on Friday, July 12, 1935. Ella was the first of five siblings born to that union. She and her siblings were reared and guided in a God-fearing, close-knit home filled with fun, laughter, and hard work. Ella received her primary education at Colonial School, Gramercy, LA and graduated from Cypress Grove High School, Lutcher, LA in 1954. Ella began her walk of faith early in life and confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior being baptized July 27, 1952 under the leadership of Rev. Versey Michael. Sensing the call to something greater, Ella began her collegiate career at Southern University A&M graduating June 1958 with a B.A. Elementary Education. Ella had a motto, “Always keep learning” and that she demonstrated by continuing her education receiving her Master’s Degree in Education (1974), +30, and other continuing education credentials from Louisiana State University (Library Science), Nicholls State University, Loyola University, and The University of New Orleans. To support herself while pursuing her undergrad degree, Ella worked as a waitress in the cafeteria during her freshman year and later as a page in the Reference Department of the Library her sophomore thru senior years. Ella not only had a love for learning, she had an anointed voice for singing. While attending Southern University she became a member of the University Choir and a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. It was during her college years that Ella met the love of her life, Morris Henry Roberts who also was involved in education and singing. The “city boy and country girl” were a match made in heaven. Ella and Morris wed Saturday, August 30, 1958 and began their Teaching careers in St. James and St. John Parishes respectively. The happy couple settled down in their first apartment in Gramercy, LA but later spread their wings and move to their home in Reserve, LA. Morris also became a member of the New Zion Baptist Church where Ella served as a Primary Sunday School Teacher and Morris as the Sunday School Superintendent. By December 1959, a bouncing baby girl, Crystal Leannette Roberts was born and five years later in September 1964, Edward Henry Roberts was added to the family. What happy times permeated the home while Ella and Morris loved educating youth and raising their family. Unfortunately tragedy struck and Ella became an early widow only after six years of marriage. God called Morris home October 30, 1964. As time passed and God called Rev. Versey Michael home, Ella continued her love for teaching as a Sunday School teacher under the leadership of Rev. Emil Dean Mitchell, Sr. as well as singing and serving in the Senior and Women’s Choirs. Ella loved praising God so much that on various occasions she was asked to sing a solo or she voluntarily helped out other choirs when attending other churches. Her operatic voice in singing God Specializes or Precious Lord Take My Hand were some of her favorites. Ella’s home was often filled with her praising God while taking care of her home. She did not send her kids to church, she trained them in the way they should go on a daily basis and brought them to church with her. Following God’s call and leading, Ella became a member of First Community Antioch Baptist Church April 9, 1995 under the leadership of Rev. Ferdinand Gaines, Jr. Ella’s love for God and all people extended through her secular and sacred service. Ella was involved in: Private Tutoring - Elementary Education; Religious - Sunday School Primary Department; Sunday School Teaching (Grades 1-3); Senior & Women’s Choirs; President – Pastor’s Aide Club; Leadership, Bulletin Board, Diabetic Support Group, Prayer Vigil, Missions Ministries; Lutcher/Gramercy Civic Organization; Gramercy Concerned Citizens; NAACP. As an Educator at heart, Ella taught for 30.5 years retiring from the St. James Parish Public School System in June 1990. During her tenure Ella put her hands and heart to work even and often spending her own money educating people through: St. James Community Action (Head Start), Lutcher Center #2, Sylvan Learning Center, LaPlace; Huntington Learning Center. By September 1990 when Project Read began, her love for educating drew her back to work part-time as a Facilitator assisting teachers of grades 1-8 with various strands and strategies of the reading programs by conducting lectures, workshops, and demonstrations. Ella’s home was warm, fun loving, and she ran a “tight ship”. She was diligent in tending to the needs of her children, grandchildren, and family without being asked. Ella would go above and beyond to ensure they had what was needed to succeed even purchasing her own private copying machine so that she could help others. Truly God broke the mold when He created her. In July 1998, Ella proudly welcomed and later mourned her first grandson, “Little Eddie”. God was not done and later blessed her with three granddaughters, Hannah, Haley, and Heather, all of whom were the apple of her eyes. “Momo Ella” would stay involved in their lives traveling where ever and whenever to spend time with her family. When God summoned her, His angels ushered her into her heavenly home 5am, Wednesday, January 18, 2023. God works in mysterious ways. While Ella took her last breath the gospel song was playing, “When you hear of my home going, don’t worry about me”. Ella was confident in and trusted God’s Word. Ella leaves behind a plethora of priceless memories that will forever be embedded in the hearts of her devoted children, Crystal and Eddie; a devoted daughter-in-law, Antoinette; three grandchildren, Hannah, Haley, and Heather; aunt, Charlotte Smith; loving sister (Rose Bell); sisters-in-law (Floy Batiste and Elaine Jones); brother-in-law, (Donald Blair), plus a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and two Godchildren, Keshall London and Lyric Lemar. Beloved family members that preceded her in death were her husband, Morris Henry Roberts; parents, Edward Sr. and Lottie Young; grandmother, Louise Booker; sisters, Ruth (James) Howard, Regina (Wilson) Mitchell; brother, Edward Young Jr; grandson Edward H Roberts, Jr.; aunts, Janie Carr, Edna Johnson, Ethel King, Margaret Cooper, Gloria Johnson, Nola Lamar, Justina Johnson, and Lizzie Mae Governor; father and mother-in-law, Morris and Gertrude Roberts; sisters-in-law, Adlay Roberts, Marion Gooden, Helois Blair; nieces, Lottie Howard, Cindy Blair Lee, and Athalia Williams-Lewis; nephews, Bryant Howard, Donald Blair, Thurston Gooden, and Philip Gooden. Felton Elvin Wallace, Jr.

Felton "Cat" Elvin Wallace, Jr., a native of Lutcher and a resident of Baton Rouge, was born on February 22, 1982 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Deborah Burl and Felton Wallace Sr. He departed this earthly life and entered eternal rest on April 4, 2023. Felton accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior at an early age. He was baptized at Israelite Baptist Church of Lutcher, Louisiana. He continued his faith walk as a member of King Solomon Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Rowdy Scott, Sr. Cat loved the Lord with all his heart. His favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:13, which says, "Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding." His two favorite songs were "Your Grace and Mercy" by Mississippi Mass Choir and "Tomorrow" by The Winans. Cat worked with the Man-Up Youth Group and attended Brotherhood and many men's retreats. His mission was to help bring youths and others he encountered to Christ. After he planted seeds and completed his work here on earth, God called him home. Cat was educated in the St. James Parish School System. He later graduated from South Central Louisiana Technical College with an Associate's Degree in Process Production Technology - Gulf of Mexico on June 4, 2014. Felton was married to his best friend, LaRita Scott Wallace, and they shared a wonderful life together. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. They raised their four children together: Jontre Kirklin, Jamarion Bartley, Jhala Kirklin, and Jayceon Bartley. He loved his children with all his heart and nurtured them to the best of his ability. As a father his goal was to teach them to love and fear God and to always stick together. He often spoke that his peace came from being home with his family raising his children, traveling, and breeding and tending to his dogs with his best friend Myron Mills, Sr. From a child to a man, Cat was the clown and life of the party. There was never a dull moment when he was in your presence. Even when you met him for the first time, you felt as though you'd known him your entire life. From his storytelling, jokes, dances, and real-life conversations, his love was pure and always felt. He was a giver with a heart of gold and loved the kids. If anyone was in need, he would give them the clothes off his back. He often stated that he related closely to the disciple Peter in the Bible because through his imperfections, God still used him. He never wanted praise for his efforts, so he always worked passionately in the background. The life Cat lived was invaluable and can teach us many things, and there is definitely one thing Cat showed us about the Lord our God: He can pack more into the last chapter of your life than into all those that preceded it. Felton leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife and children; father, Felton (Diane) Wallace Sr.; siblings, Laquaita (Wendall) Banks, Ariane (Clay Sr.) Raymond, Aliska Franklin, Kawanda Jackson, Nicquil (Michael) Allen, Charles Cummings; sisters-in-law, Keiosha Scott, Anyaielle Adams, Givongi (Tyrone) Love, Larrion (Chaddrick) Adams; brothers-in law, Treylon Smith, Jairus Bazile, Jarriel Bazile; mother-in-law, Sandra Martin; father-in-law, Larry Scott; aunts, Veronica Ross, Pamela (Reginald) Moore, Sandra (Pete) Wilson, Samantha Burl-Wilson, Rachel Burl, and Aundrenee Jackson; uncle, Andre Burl. He also leaves his devoted nephew, Brendon Taylor; lifelong friends, Myron Mills, Tyrus Kelson, and Sean Long; seven Godchildren: Kendell Jackson, Ky'Mani Mills, Malaya Mitchell, Ty'ron Mitchell, Caiden Clofer, Jru Bartley, and Zayah Cooper; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Felton was preceded in death by his mother, Deborah Ann Burl; aunt, Sonya Burl; uncles, Helton Cooks, James Price; cousin, James Demario Burl; grandparents, Thelma Price Burl and Elvin Burl, and Thelma Wallace and Clarence Wallace; and Godchild, Ja'Maze Fluence. Felton will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched, both far and near. Sleep on, Cat. Take your rest! Constance Vanessa Williams

April 14, 1955 - June 3, 2023
Sixty-eight years ago, on Thursday, April 14, 1955, God ordained the birth of Constance Vanessa in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the firstborn child of Whelmon Roosevelt and Ruby Gordon Armont. She became the big sister to Darryl Charles, Dale Jerome, and Arlette Trenise. Constance was reared in the close-knit community of Lutcher. She began her formal education in a segregated school, the former Cypress Grove Elementary. She later graduated from Lutcher High School in 1973. Constance took hold of God's hand at an early age upon her confessed belief in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was baptized according to her faith by the late Rev. James Gordon, Sr. at King David Baptist Church in Lutcher. In the years that followed, she became a member of First Community Antioch Baptist Church in Lutcher under the late Pastor Ferdinand Gaines' leadership. She was a faithful servant and loved her church family. She joined the choir to make "joyful noises" unto the Lord. Constance enjoyed spending time with family and friends, attending the sport activities of her grandsons and shopping. Constance was never a cook, but she loved her son-in-law's barbeque. She was known to eat all the meat out of your pot when no one was looking. On Saturday, June 3, 2023, with her family at her bedside at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Constance was ready to depart. She knew that the time of her death was at hand; she had fought a good fight; she had finished the race; she had remained faithful; so, she reached for the prize which awaited her...the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give her on that day. (11 Timothy 4:6-8) Beloved family members that preceded her in death were her parents; Whelmon Roosevelt and Ruby Gordon Armont; and brother, Dale Jerome Armont. Constance's humor, warmth and memories are eternally embedded in the hearts and minds of her loving children; daughter and son-in-law, Keon and Juan Joseph, Sr.; son, PJ Whitaker; brother and sister-in-law, Darryl and Carla Armont; sister, Arlette Armont; granddaughter, Jai Williams; grandsons, Juan, Jr. and Jaimylon Joseph; uncles, Percy (Janice Taylor) Gordon, Robert (Rosemary Washington) Gordon, and Gary (Veronica Johnson) Gordon; aunts, Gaymelda Pittman and Donna Armont Foley; devoted friend, Karen Landry Wallace; nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life honoring Constance Vanessa Williams will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023, at First Community Antioch Church, 10860 LA-3125, Lutcher, LA 70071. Visitation begins at 9 am. Service will start at 11 am. Entombment to follow at St.Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, 2130 Rectory Street Paulina, Louisiana, 70763.
