Fr. Edward Francis Fuss, S.M., died on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at St. James Hospital in Lutcher, LA. Fr. Fuss, S.M. was professed as a Marist religious (Society of Mary) on July 27, 1986, and ordained to the priesthood on December 16, 1989. He spent his entire priestly ministry serving the Catholic communities on the River Road as the parochial vicar at St. Joseph Church (1989-1991), as pastor at Sacred Heart Church (1991 - 1997), and as parochial vicar at both parishes and at St. Michael the Archangel Church until 2002 when he retired. However, he continued to serve the parishes but in a reduced capacity until his recent illness required his hospitalization. Prior to his joining the Marist Fathers and Brothers, Fr. Fuss, S.M. served in the Army's 379th Regiment, 95th Infantry, Artillery Division during World War II from 1944 - 1946. There he saw action during the Battle of the Bulge. He remained a faithful member of the VFW Post 5852 in Lutcher, LA. After the War, Fr. Fuss, S.M. also studied at the Alexian Brothers School of Nursing, and at DePaul School of Nursing where he earned his nursing credentials and Bachelors of Science degree. He went on to study health care administration at the University of California Los Angeles earning his Master's Degree. He served as administrator at hospitals in Kokomo, Indiana, Lubbock, Texas and Beaumont, Texas. Fr. Fuss was devoted to caring for the sick and the elderly during the twenty-seven years he served the Catholic communities on the River Road. Many parishioners fondly recount how his wise counsel, compassionate manner, friendly disposition and prayerful demeanor brought comfort and consolation to those who were ill and who were gripped by grief at the loss of a loved one. Fr. Fuss still managed to find time to enjoy a good meal and the company of many parishioners whom he regarded as his friends. He was especially close to Jennie and L.J. St. Pierre whose friendship remained constant throughout his years on the River Road and who were especially devoted to caring for him as his illness progressed. Fr. Fuss remained close to his family who feel his loss deeply. He was the youngest of 11 children born on February 17, 1926, in East Chicago, Indiana to Polish immigrant parents. His love of the Blessed Virgin Mary was instilled in him at an early age by his mother Anna, so it was quite fitting that he would be ordained a Marist. As a youth, he strongly desired to attend the local Catholic high school, Bishop Noll Institute, but his parents could not afford the tuition. He found odd jobs and swept floors at a dentist office for eighty cents a week to help pay his way. He was a life-long St. Louis Cardinals fan, a connoisseur of Danish sweet rolls and an avid reader. One of his favorite memories was of his trip to the Holy Land. Preceded in death by Parents: Albert Fuss and Anna Gruszczyk; Brothers: Andrew (Celia) Fus, Walter (Ann), Joseph (Irene) and Stanley Fuss; Sisters: Stella (John) Spiker, Carrie (Henry) Spejewski, Mary (Theodore) Zugel and Sophie (Clifton) Byers; Nephews: Theodore, Donald and Gregory Zugel and Norbert Fuss. Ruth F. Gaudin, a resident of Lutcher, was born on September 12, 1922 and passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at the age of 98. She was delivered by a midwife in Ridge, Louisiana. She attended College at Southwestern University in Lafayette and got a degree in Home Economics. She met William Heagy while she was working in Ville Platt, Louisiana with LSU extension service. He was stationed at an Army Base near Alexandria. They were married in 1946 and moved to St. Louis, Missouri. While in St. Louis she worked for Ralston Purina as a product demonstrator. While is St. Louis she had 2 sons, Paul Kendall Heagy (born in 1947) and David Gerard Heagy (born in 1951). In 1952 she and her sons moved back to Louisiana. They stayed with her parents for about a year in Chef Mentour. She worked in New Orleans demonstrating sewing technique and products. She did a 30 second commercial on sewing technique that was seen by a former colleague at extension service. She received a call from extension service asking her if she were interested in returning to work as a Home Demonstration Agent with them. Se accepted the offer and moved to St. James Parish on 1954. She often said she "Zig Zagged" her way into St. James Parish. Her and her sons moved to Convent near the Court House where she worked. They then moved to Gramercy in a rental house near the Sacred Heart Church. It was in 1956 when she was introduced to Wilbert P. Gaudin "Wootsie" at Hymel's Restaurant. Wootsie did upholstery for a living. They dated and were married in 1956. Wootsie had 1 son (W. Paul Jr.) that was coincidently the same exact age as her son David (within 2 hours). The 2 got along very well. Ruth and Wootsie bought a house in Lutcher on 3rd Street and settled into life. In 1961 their 1st child (Jeffrey) was born. In 1963 their 2nd child (Carla) was born. That completed the Yours, Mine, and Our scenario for them. Ruth and Wootsie made their life in Lutcher and in 1983 both retired. Over the years they made their home in Lutcher at 702 3rd Street. Mom always said she was grateful to have lived a good healthy life. Cancer survivor. Loved to sew. Wrote the "Up and Down the River" article in the News Examiner. Many Paintings to her credit.
