Himel, a loyal and faithful husband, successful attorney, public servant and patriot, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at 1:45 a.m. at Ollie Steele Burden Manor in Baton Rouge of complications from a stroke which he suffered in June. He was 90, born in Convent in St. James Parish on Nov. 19, 1914. He was the ninth of 11 children of Adele Nicolle Himel and Judge Henry L. Himel. His early education was at Romeville High School. He obtained an undergraduate degree from Tulane University and went on to obtain his juris doctorate in 1939, also from Tulane. He then entered into the practice of law in Lutcher with Sigur J. Martin, forming the law firm of Martin and Himel, which continued to grow under his guidance, and is now Martin, Himel, Peytavin & Nobile. After joining the Navy, he trained and served on a variety of vessels, culminating in his service as executive officer on the USS Superior AM-311, a minesweeper in the Pacific Theater. He assumed command of the vessel at the war's end and brought her home after clearing Japanese mines in the post-war period. Upon receiving his Navy discharge on March 31, 1946, he returned to his home in St. James Parish and established a successful law practice. In 1960, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives from the parishes of St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles, a position which he occupied with dignity and integrity for 12 years. He also served on the board of directors of First American Bank & Trust from 1969 to 1993. He continued in the practice of law until his retirement in 2004. In 1999, he was honored by the Louisiana State Bar Association for 60 years of membership. He was also a mentor and set an example of moral and ethical behavior for many young attorneys whom he came to know. He was a lover of travel, taking many trips to Europe and across the United States with family members. He particularly enjoyed attending reunions of his shipmates.
