Elsie will be remembered for her many talents and gifts; her greatest were her sewing and embroidery skills as well as her Christmas Eve pot of Red Bean Gumbo. What many people don't know about her is how very prayerful she was. If you asked her to pray for something, you could rest assured, she flooded heaven for you. Her greatest comfort was her rosary. She loved to shop and visit with family and friends. A visit with her was always filled with lots of laughter and a good cup of coffee. Her door was always open, and she welcomed guests with her warm and friendly smile. She had a soft spot in her heart for animals, always having at least one, sometimes several pets at a time. She was an avid gardener with a fabulous green thumb. Mom, Maw-Maw, Miss Elsie … Your life was a blessing, your memory will always be a treasure … You were loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure … Rest in peace, sweet lady; we will love you always! A visitation for Elsie will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Paulina from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Rev. Vincent J. Dufresne, beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 3, 2021. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Mausoleum.

John Trist Minvielle Jr.

JT was called to his final reward on Friday, June 10, 2016 at the Carpenter House in Baton Rouge, LA surrounded by his loving family at the age of 83. He was born in Convent, Louisiana on September 29, 1932, and a resident of Gramercy for the past 58 years. He grew up and worked on Uncle Sam Plantation, attended St Michael's Elementary School, and graduated from Romeville High School all in Convent, LA. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked for Sanchez Furniture & Appliances and retired from Colonial Sugars Refinery in Gramercy, LA after 36 years of service. He was always looking forward to the next family project and would ask "Who's house is next?" He was loved by all his family and friends and will be deeply missed especially by his "silver fox", but forever in our hearts. Myrtle Mitchell

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7. On Thursday, July 30, 2020, Myrtle Mitchell quietly slipped away from us to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 71 years old-three score and ten plus one. Myrtle was the ninth child born to the union of the late Harold Mitchell Sr. and Julia Ross Mitchell on February 2, 1949 in Paulina La. Though she was a part of a large family, Myrtle's personality would not let her be ignored. On July 19, 1959, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the young age of 10 and was baptized in the Mississippi River by the late William Taylor of the Israelite Baptist Church. Raised in a home with strong Christian values, she regularly attended church, Sunday School, vacation bible school and Wednesday night Bible study. She also honored her mother and father, as the Bible commands. She later moved her membership to New Zion Christian Center, where her brother Emil Dean Mitchell is the pastor. Myrtle matriculated in the segregated St. James Parish Schools, attending Cypress Grove Elementary and High School. She graduated from Cypress Gross High School on May 26, 1968. After graduation, Myrtle enrolled in the Job Corp in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Myrtle moved to New Orleans as a young adult and worked a variety of jobs while there, including Schwegmann's grocery store and Zulu Social and Pleasure Club. Myrtle held a variety of jobs throughout her lifetime, such as cashier, nurse's aide, hostess, floral assistant, and construction jobs. Myrtle's life forever changed on September 3, 1977 when the apple of her eye, her son A'Darryl Dwayne Davis was born. Myrtle was a devoted, loving and dedicated mother-doing whatever she had to to provide for her son. She extended her motherly love to A'Darryl's friends, her younger siblings and nephews. Myrtle leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted son, A'Darryl Dwayne Davis, granddaughter Aedyn Benn, daughter-in-law Susan Smith, grandchildren-in-law Janiya and Jahyra Smith, sisters Beatrice M. Williams, Melba Mae Batiste, Rubenstein Clark, Marvel Ann and Julia Lee Mitchell and Angela Songy; brothers-Floyd and Rev. He graduated from St. Joseph Elementary School in Paulina, Lutcher High School, LSU Baton Rouge, and St. Louis, Missouri School of Dentistry. He practiced general dentistry in Lutcher for several years before completing a Periodontics degree at Loyola School of Dentistry which morphed into LSU Dental School. Ron's devout Catholic faith was formed at St. Joseph Elementary School. At Lutcher Ron took part in all athletics and excelled in football and baseball. He was most proud of being on Lutcher's 1951 State Baseball Championship team. Anxious to become a dentist, he completed his undergraduate studies at LSU Baton Rouge in three years so he could begin at St. Louis School of Dentistry where he made lifelong friends. In 2005 the American Academy of Periodontics awarded him an OUTSTANDING TEACHER OF THE YEAR award. He is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists and in 2005-2006 served as president of its Louisiana region. He is an active life member of the American Academy of Periodontists, and a life member of both the American College of Dentists as well as the American Dental Association. In 1995 Ron retired from his solo periodontic practice after 25 years, during which he employed eleven staff members in his downtown, Wausau, WI office, and his Eagle River, WI satellite office. From 1978-80 he was president of the Wisconsin Society of Periodontists. He's also been president of the Central Wisconsin Dental Society; Vice-chairman of Wausau Hospital Staff; president of the Marathon County Dental Society, while serving on numerous other medical and professional committees and boards in central Wisconsin. Following retirement, Ron moved to Mandeville, LA where he became active in civic activities, most notably a founding member of the Italian-American Society where he proudly promoted his Italian heritage. He was a member and golfer at Beau Chene Golf and Country Club until hip replacement surgery interfered with his golf swing. In recent years he made daily visits to the Adoration Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Church. He found great joy in his Monica cousins and their families, as well as his grandchildren and his first great-grandchild, Madelyn Norton. Fallen CBP Inspector Receives Additional Recognition At Louisiana Memorial
New Orleans - Hundreds of family members, federal, state and local law enforcement officers, elected officials and untold numbers watching via a live broadcast, gathered at the Louisiana Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on May 6 to pay homage to officers who had given their lives in the service of their Louisiana communities during 2009. Two more names are now inscribed on the walls of the monument as Deputy Sheriff Richard J. Stiles, Jr., of East Feliciana Sheriff's Office, and Detective Robert Eugene Beane of Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office, both of whom lost their lives in the line of duty last year, were added to the other 388 Louisiana officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. In addition, legacy U. S. Customs Senior Inspector Thomas Murray's life and death were remembered by his family and peers along with the two fallen officers. Senior Inspector Murray died tragically on October 30, 2001, while searching the hold of a Panamanian ship he was inspecting at the Port of Gramercy, La. Two of the ship's crew members, including the captain, also entered the hold to assist Senior Inspector Murray and lost consciousness and collapsed. All three died as a result of asphyxiation likely caused by the oxidation of scrap iron in the hold. Although Inspector Murray's name had already been inscribed on the granite walls of the memorial in 2002, neither his wife nor their children were present, as they were in the nation's capital as Murray was being enshrined at the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial. The ceremony was solemn, but the messages were powerful, as the survivors served as reminders of the many fallen heroes and not how they died but how they lived their lives. CBP Area Port Director Mitch Merriam spoke of how Senior Inspector Murray's tragic passing had affected so many other law enforcement and maritime personnel throughout the world with the safety changes that are practiced today because of the accident that took his life. He said, "In addition to the recurring training CBP officers receive, just two weeks ago, in that very same location on the river, SWAT teams conducted ship search training including lessons learned about the very same confined space threats that took Tom from us nine years ago. I'm here to say that one of Tom's lasting legacies is the training and awareness that continues to save lives now and will for years to come." The responsibilities and potential ultimate sacrifice of CBP officers and all those who serve their nation and respective states as law enforcement officers was even more evident as the 21 gun salute volley pierced the quiet of the evening. And of all the military bugle calls, none is so easily recognized or renders more emotion than the call of taps; this night was no different. Two more names are now inscribed on the walls of Louisiana Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, and Inspector Thomas Murray's life and death have been remembered anew, but this time with his family present, many of whom were watching via the live broadcast of the ceremony.

Curtis Nicholson

Mr. Curtis Nicholson, 47 - Motorcyclist Dies In Crash During 120 mph Pursuit by State Police
A Gramercy man has died after being ejected from his motorcycle during a pursuit. Shortly after 7:00 pm Wednesday evening, Louisiana State Police Troopers responded to a crash located on LA 3213 just east of LA 3127. According to the investigating Troopers, a Suzuki motorcycle was traveling northbound on LA 3127 just inside the St. John Parish line. An on duty St. John Parish Sheriff's Officer clocked the motorcycle speeding at 82 mph in a 55 mph zone. The Officer attempted to stop the motorcycle, at which time the driver of the motorcycle increased his speed to over 120 mph while entering St. James Parish. While on LA 3213 the motorcyclist failed to negotiate a hard right curve and ran off the road. The driver of the motorcycle, identified as 47-year-old Curtis Nicholson from Gramercy, LA, was ejected from his bike due to the crash. Although Mr. Nicholson was wearing a US-D.O.T. approved helmet, he sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the St. James Parish Coroner's Office. Investigating Troopers report that alcohol impairment is unknown at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers would like to remind everyone to slow down and pull over onto the right shoulder of the roadway if they are being stopped. Motorists should remember that driving at high speeds often leads to serious injuries or death in motor vehicle crashes. As the holiday season approaches, motorists should drive responsibly, wear their seatbelts, and don't drive a vehicle if alcohol has been consumed. The life you risk by trying to evade the police may be your own. Life is far greater and more valuable than the cost of a ticket.
