Adam L. Bourgeois, sheriff of St. James parish, La., was born in that parish March 25, 1831, as was also his father, Adam L. Bourgeois Sr., whose birth occurred in 1806. This family descended from the Acadians, and is of French extraction. The father was a prominent planter and followed that calling until his death in 1855. Adam Bourgeois Jr., was the eldest of ten children, three sons and one daughter now living, and received his education in a private school at Frankfort, Ky. Like his father he selected planting as his occupation in life and continued this until 1879, when he was elected to the office of sheriff. Previous to this, in 1872, he was elected treasurer of St. James parish and filled this position with honor to himself and to the satisfaction of his constituents until 1874. He was subsequently elected police jury and was president of that honorable body until elected to the office of sheriff. In the latter capacity he is a representive, thoroughgoing and efficient officer, and the manner in which he has discharged the duties of this office has fully testified as to the wisdom of the people's choice. On February 7, 1853, he married Miss Azadma Cheuet, of St. James parish, who died 15 September 1873, leaving a large family of children, four sons, and six daughters, now living. On the 3d of May, 1879, Mr. Bourgeois married Miss A.Schexnaydre,
and they have two daughters and three sons living. In politics Mr. Bourgeois was formerly a whig but he now affiliates with the democratic party.

Jean Pierre Bourgeois, Oldest Planter, Passes
Jean Pierre Bourgeois, age 92 years, the oldest resident of St. James Parish, and one of the pioneer planters of Louisiana, died at the residence of his stepson, Dr. J. L. Deslattes, at Paulina, La., yesterday forenoon at 10 o'clock. Mr. Bourgeois was born in St. James, and was the son of a distinguished French family. In early life he engaged in the planting business in St. James, and soon became a man of wealth and importance in the state. Up to the time of his retirement from active life, a number of years ago, Mr. Bourgeois was a planter, and during his career he introduced many of the modern methods of sugar-making which have since been perfected. Although Mr. Bourgeois took no active part in the Civil War, he played his part during the stirring days when the state was struggling for release from the thraldom of the carpetbagger. The gentleman, with his wife, who was a Miss Eugenie Schnayder, passed his declining years at the plantation home of Dr. Deslattes. He had been ailing for sometime, and while his death will prove a shock to a large circle of relatives and friends, it was not altogether unexpected. The funeral will take place this morning at 11 o'clock, and solemn requiem mall will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Convent. Besides a wife and stepson, Dr. Deslattes, Mr. Bourgeois is survived by three step-grandchildren, Eland and Richard Deslattes of New Orleans,
and Miss Marie Deslattes of Colina. Mr. Bourgeois was well known all over the state, and had many friends in this city. [Note: Several spelling errors corrected from original]
