Gun Falls from Closet, Discharges, Kills Former Belmont Postmaster
(Special to The Times-Picayune) Belmont, La., Nov. 9 - a 46-year-old former postmaster at Belmont, St. James Parish, was killed early today when a shotgun fell from a closet and accidentally discharged while she was cleaning the bathroom of her home her. Dr. A. J. Nobile, parish coroner, said the woman, Mrs. Gaston Martin, died of a gunshot wound of the back of the head. He said death apparently was instantaneous. Mrs. Martin, according to Dr. Nobile, was found dead shortly after 8 a.m. when her husband returned from mass with three of their children, Renie Mae, Janet and Jerome. The fourth child, Phyllis, 3, was home at the time of the accident. The child, who was in the bathroom with her mother but escaped injury, ran from house into the arms of her father who was just entering the gate leading to their home. "Come quick, daddy, " she pleaded, "mama is lying on the floor in the bathroom and won't speak to me." Mr. Martin told Dr. Nobile he did not know the gun was loaded. He said he had lent it to a friend to hunt squirrels a week ago and placed it in the closet without inspecting it when it was returned. The coroner said the weapon, a double-barreled hammerless type gun, fell to the floor when Mrs. Martin opened the closet door.
He said she was struck by the full charge of the birdshot.

Sister Juanita Ann Wallace was born in New Orleans, LA on April 14, 1953 to the union of the late Mary Schofield Wallace and Camille Jack Wallace. Growing up in a Christian home, Juanita accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at an early age by the late Reverend James Gordon of King David Baptist Church. She attended Cypress Grove Elementary and graduated from Lutcher High School in 1971. She continued her education at Grambling State University in Grambling, LA and earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. It was during her tenure at Grambling State University when she pledged in 1973 and became a member of The Audacious Alpha Theta Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. After successfully completing her college education, Juanita was united in marriage to Jessie O'Neal. From that union came Jarvis D. O'Neal and Jared D. O'Neal. She was a dedicated and loving educator in St. James Parish School System. Her career began in August 1976 and ended when she retired in June 2012. She was blessed to serve as an educator for 36 years. She had a passion for serving children with special needs and their families. She was truly blessed with the gift of loving and teaching children. Juanita was persistent in making sure children received all available resources and opportunities that helped them to excel within the school system. With great diligence she accepted her calling of the Holy Spirit and became a member of First Community Antioch Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Ferdinand Gaines, Jr. She proudly served in the capacities of Youth Ministry teacher and Event Planning Coordinator. She would later add Nursing Home Ministry and "The Kitchen Crew" Ministry to her services in the church. She was very committed to her study of God's Word which was shown through her dedicated reading of her daily devotion, weekly attendance at Adult Bible Class, Hour of Prayer and Women's Ministry Meeting. She shared her love of God with her family, friends, and everyone she met. She embodied all attributes of the fruit of the spirit and truly loved God. Juanita had a contagious smile that would bring a warm comfort in any room. She was very wise, peaceful, and always uplifting others. She loved to love on people. She was a walking embodiment of "Knowledge is Power." As a giver and supporter of her family, she was patient and strict with her loved ones, but they all knew it was out of genuine love. In addition to displaying her love of serving God in many capacities; Juanita also loved to serve her others through her God-given talent of writing, especially through poems, several of which were published in Jet and Essence magazines. Other ways she displayed her love of serving were being a seamstress, coupon saver, and shopper for others. She was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. Those moments became even more special when she became a grandmother and was affectionally called "Ann Momo". She was known to her nieces and nephews as "Tee Ann" and "Mrs. Juanita" to many others but she always displayed the characteristics of a loving mother to every one of them. She leaves to cherish her beloved memories: two sons, Jarvis O'Neal and Jared (Lyncoln) O'Neal Sr.; grandchildren, Jared Jr., Jayce, and Jaide; sister, Audrey Mae (Earl) White; nieces, Charmaine White, Kimberly (Sampson) Duplessis, Normetric, Bry'an, and China Storks, Darri'Yonne Anderson, Keisha White (Alberto) Mosqueda, Atlantis (Adetoyese) Adedipe, and De'Juene Turner; nephews, Terence (Marvis) White Sr., Terence (Ebony) White Jr., Jyron White, Jydell White, Austyn Williams and Darrington Anderson; eight great-great nephews; two great-great nieces; devoted caregivers, Tessa Turner and Brenda Davis; a devoted cousin, Joe Long; caring neighbors, Wallace and Kathleen Isom; devoted friends, Yvonne Stewart, Debora Gaines, Yvette Muse, Robin Rapheal, Yvonne Williams, Yvette Alexis, and Shirley B. Mr. Alphonse Oubre died on March 13 at 6 p.m. of a chest disease, and his remains were transported to the St. Michel cemetery in St. James, his native parish. The name of the deceased was found frequently in our civil unrest. Butcher in St. James before the war, he enlisted in the Confederate army from where he returned on vacation during the occupation of Louisiana by federal troops. He refrained from joining his army corps, which made him considered a traitor to the Confederacy and loyal to the Union. He was the first, if we are not mistaken, to accept a job under the new regime and quickly made a leap that scared the public conscience much more than it does today. He fulfilled the functions of sheriff, collector, justice of the peace, and finally clerk. Of the three members of this famous triumvirate for the registration of reconstruction laws, two have disappeared, Robert B. Carson and Alphonse Oubre. Only one left, Mortimer F. Smith, who carved out a lion's share. Alphonse Oubre, who had brought help and comfort to the radical party, was abandoned by them, and the name of Mr. Lucien Cambre was substituted for his on a list of candidates to which victory was assured in advance. Since his disgrace, the deceased has not been talked about. Alphonse Oubre is now before a Supreme Court which judges human actions as a last resort, and we will not try his memory.
His friends say he was sociable and obliging. Let the earth be light to him! Nil de mortuis nisi bonum. Alphonse Oubre was only 35 years old.
