They do not just go off to some dark and distant place. They simply continue into eternal life. We do not see them because we are still in the darkness of this world. But their spiritual eyes, filled with the light of heaven, are always aware of us as they wait for the day when we shall share their perfect joy.
We are born for heaven and we end this life of tears to begin our life of endless happiness. Arrangements under the direction of Ourso Funeral Home, Donaldsonville, LA.

Hattie Jeffery Dumas was born on April 20, 1923 in Vacherie, LA to the late Barthelemy Jeffery and Adele Armant Jeffery. In 1945, she married the love of her life, the late Eddie Dumas, to whom she was lovingly devoted until his death in 2006. Both Hattie and Eddie loved to tell the story of their courtship. They remembered how Eddie would ride on a horse from back Vacherie to see his fiancée and how he had to obtain leave from his military service during WWII to return to Vacherie to get married in 1945. Eddie had to go back to his Army Unit right after the wedding ceremony; nevertheless, the love birds were quickly reunited after the war and settled into their home in New Orleans, LA where they remained for the rest of their lives. They became parents to their only child, LaVergne Dumas Pierre, who was and is the joy of their lives and the source of their greatest pride. Hattie was a devoted Catholic, who kept her prayer book always at her side. She was an active member of Holy Ghost Church in New Orleans, LA and later St. Mathias Catholic Church (now known as Holy Trinity). Hattie said the rosary daily, along with both morning and evening prayers. Family and friends knew that when you were on her prayer list, blessings would soon follow because Hattie seemed to have a special relationship with the Lord. She was a fantastic cook, known especially for her crawfish bisque, jambalaya, and dirty rice. She also enjoyed preparing the meat her loving husband would bring home from his frequent hunting trips to Geismar, LA. Whether it would be rabbit or deer, Hattie would prepare a feast! And she always set a beautiful table to welcome all into her home. Hattie was a tireless caretaker. She worked as a home health provider for many years, and devoted the later part of her life to nursing her husband Eddie with loving devotion until his death in 2006 from complications of diabetes. She also cared for ailing family and friends, including her mother (known as "Mom Del") and her mother-in-law, Julia (known as "Julia Ma") She was full of laughter and fun. She enjoyed playing Pitty Pat with her club members, entertaining in her home, decorating for the holidays, and shopping on Canal Street. She liked coffee and chicory in the mornings and warm milk at night before bed. Everybody has their favorite stories of her warm and generous spirit. Her grandson, Ernest, remembers fondly the many times she picked him up from Mater Dolorosa Elementary School on the streetcar, and how they would then travel to the nearby Burger King for sandwiches and onion rings. Ernest says his grandmother supported his first entrepreneurial endeavors as a young child: She was his greatest champion as he sold frozen cups from the house and, thus, "Pierre Enterprise" was born. Her daughter, LaVergne, says simply that her best friend, travel buddy, and co-pilot through life is gone. Hattie enjoyed nice clothes, getting her hair done, watching her soap operas, and caring for her home. Hattie was a beautiful person inside and out and was loved by all. We will miss her dearly. Hattie leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, LaVergne Dumas Pierre; grandson, Ernest Pierre (Elaine); granddaughter Erione; goddaughter Antoinette Chevalier; step grandchild, Demisha; step great-grandchildren, Tamije and Akailis; a host of nieces and nephews, godchildren, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Eddie Dumas, parents, the late Barthelemy Jeffery and Adele Armant Jeffery; siblings, Alfred Jeffery, Theresa Etienne, Benjamin Jeffery, Bernard Jeffery, Webster Jeffery, James Jeffery, and Rose-Marie Steib. There will be a walk through public viewing on, Friday, August 28, 2020, from 5pm - 7pm at The Treasures of Life Funeral Home, 315 E Airline Highway, Gramercy, LA. Pecola Joseph Growe, fondly known as Ms. P, transitioned to her heavenly home on June 7, 2017 at Twin Oaks Nursing and Convalescent home at the age of 93. She was a native of Wallace, La but a longtime resident of New Orleans, La. She was a real example of the phrase "never met a stranger". She loved life and lived it to the fullest, inviting all to join her along the way. Ms. P always referred to herself as "the party girl" because she made all aspects of life a party. She was loved and cherished by many and was more than willing to give love in return. Although she never had any children of her own, she had a host of nieces and nephews who were more than happy to fill in and were always by her side. Following hurricane Katrina, Ms. P found herself back in her hometown. However, she could not sit still in "the country" and moved back to New Orleans as soon as her house became repaired. As she aged, she had many, many friends who assisted with her care and made sure that she lacked nothing. Her dear friend, Ms. Cat, and her family adopted her as their own and ensured that she always had her groceries, haircut, transportation to church and anything else she needed. She later decided to move back to the country where she resided until she took her rest in the Lord.
Pecola was preceded in death by her parents Wilson and Alberta Jeffery Joseph, her loving husband, James Growe, her in-laws and nine siblings. She loved the Lord with all her heart and He loved her, blessing her with 93 years of a full life, free of any sickness.

Community Mourns Loss of Life As Storm Hits Church - OVER SCORE INJURED - Death Stalks at Festival Held in Vacherie; 2 Children Killed
Vacherie, La., Aug. 25 - Joint funeral services will be held in the new St. Phillips church today for the eight victims of a twister which demolished an old church yesterday afternoon while a crowd was gathering for a church festival.
The community is bowed in sorrow over the tragedy. The dead were all members of old families of the French Catholic community and related to many in the country side. Among the score of injured little hope is held for the recovery of
Miss Mary Haydel, a member of a family of which three were killed outright and another injured.
CHILDREN DIE
Stephen Haydel, 63, his wife, 50, and their son, Stephen Jr., 34, were dead when the heavy timbers were removed from them. Another son, Albert, was seriously injured. Two children also lost their lives, the four-year-old son of Fabian Trosclair and the little daughter of Dr. Fernandez.
Although Dr. Lionel Waguespack lost his son, Burchman, 21, he labored without rest during the afternoon and night administering to the injured. "Let us let the dead alone," he said, "and do what we can for the living." Burchman was dancing with his fiancé, when the blow came. He was killed but she escaped with but a few scratches.
Others killed were Arthur Hubbel, 40, and Miss Virginia Hubbell.
TIMBERS FALL
Big tubs of ice cream and stacks of sandwiches stand untouched near the ruins, mute reminders of the gayities that had been planned. A hundred feet away is the new church recently completed which was to have been fitted by the afternoon and evening festivities. In this building several hundred took refuge and escaped harm. Two score or more were in the old church building which had been used recently as a school an festival hall when the storm struck. It came suddenly and only a few saw the approach of the whiling cloud.
The building was very old but built is the solid fashion of earlier times. The heavy timbers were rent like lath. Their weight, however, saved many lives for aas they fell they lodged and shielded many beneath them. There was a remarkable lack of confusion. With no loss of time work of rescue was started. Those easily extricated were taken out and then the debris piece by piece was moved to get at those pinned underneath.
Vacherie is across the Mississippi river from Lutcher and about 50 miles above New Orleans.
