Rolanda Ann Lacy, affectionately known as Ro, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 17, 1963, to Elliott Lacy Sr. and Diane Ann (Jasmin) Lacy. At an early age, Ro displayed a caring and nurturing disposition. She never hesitated to help her mother with the care of her five younger siblings, while her mother and father worked to support seven children. Ro was a Godsend to her family, she always helped with the cleaning, cooking and babysitting of her younger siblings. This selflessness enabled our mother to take a much-needed rest from her hard day's work as a housekeeper. As soon as she could walk, she was attached to her mother's hip. She soaked up everything our mother would teach her and used what she learned to help make our mother's and our life a little easier. Rolanda attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School, New Orleans, LA where she received her baptism and catechism. Due to her strong academic achievements, she was accepted into St. Mary's Academy, which she was very proud of. She graduated from Warren Easton HS in 1981. She went on to further her education by attending the University of New Orleans (UNO). She had always been a brainiac. During her pursuit of higher education, she found a fondness for English and the Literary Arts. She so enjoyed these courses that when the opportunity arose for her to work for UNO in the English Department, she jumped at the chance. She retired from UNO with over 25+ years of service. During retirement, she enjoyed traveling, literature, going to plays and attending concerts. She also enjoyed going to festivals, shopping like crazy and hanging with family. The Essence Festival was one of her favorite events. Ro really had a talent for organizing. Her skills were often requested to plan many special occasions (baby showers, surprise birthday party, family cruises, family gatherings). You could always count on her for planning an event. She thoroughly enjoyed shopping excursions and family outings. She had such an eye for design and fashion! She very much
enjoyed being with family for any occasion, whether dinning together or just hanging out and letting loose. She really enjoyed playing cards, board games, and reminiscing about the good old days. Ro didn't have any children of her own, but she had a host of nieces, nephews and Godchildren that she loved to spoil. To know her was to love her. She was a wonderful and cherished sister, friend and confidant. She will be missed tremendously, but her shining light will remain in our hearts and memories forever. Ro always pushed through the pain and the hurt of her illness, never allowing it to define her, cripple her free-spirited nature or be a burden to her family. She was not one to be a hindrance to any of us and she made sure that, whenever family got together, it was always about having a good time, enjoying each other's company and showing the love she had for us all. When she was diagnosed in her late teens with a serious health condition, she remained a pillar of strength for those she loved. After many surgeries and numerous hospitalizations, she was ready for her heavenly home. The illness may have ravished her body, but not her spirit. Ro transcended to her heavenly home, surrounded by her loving family. We will miss her dearly, but we are glad that she no longer has to fight her earthly battle. Rest in Heaven, Our Sweet Angel!!! Rolanda is preceded in death by her father (Elliott Lacy Sr.), her mother (Diane A. Lacy). She leaves to cherish memories of her beloved family five brothers and a sister: Sylvester (Violet), Elliott Jr. (Mary), Orlanda, Alanna, Hasani and Ahakim; nieces and nephews: Breana Lacy, Cassie Chesterfield, Regina Chesterfield, Shelby Jr. and Marcus Pratt, DeJuan, Jordan and Hasani Jr. Lacy; great nieces and nephew: Ryleigh Chesterfield, James Jr. and Kenzi Lewis; Godchildren: Courtlen Minor, Shelby Pratt Jr., Breana Lacy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at St. Philip Catholic Church, 1175 LA-18, Vacherie, LA 70090. Visitation period will be held from 9am until Mass begins at 10:30am. Interment to follow at St. Philip Catholic Church Cemetery (located in rear of church). Final care and professional services entrusted to Treasures of Life Funeral Services, 315 E. Airline Hwy., Gramercy, LA 70052. John Bartholomew "JB" Schexnayder, Sr. entered Eternal Life on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 9:50 p.m. at the age of 86. A native and resident of Vacherie, LA born June 16, 1926, he was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold "Peto" and Veronica Roussell Schexnayder, one daughter Suzette Theresa Schexnayder; two sons, Yahya S. Muhammed (a.k.a. John B. "Tyrone" Schexnayder, Jr.) and Dale Jude Schexnayder; one grandson, Jonathan Christopher Gonzales; one sister, Leona Mae Adams; five brothers, Stanley, Roland, Hollis, Leonard Schexnayder, and Harvey James; mother-in-law Mary Champagne Harris and father-in-law Henry Gibson, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories his beloved wife of over 65 years, Dolores Joel Harris Schexnayder and their 7 survinging children: Carol Ann, Westley (Glenda) and Theodore "Teddy" (Nell) Schexnayder all of Vacherie, LA, Randall (Eva) Schexnayder of Gretna, LA, Ricardo (Cynthia) Schexnayder of Baton Rouge, LA, Laphalle (Monia) Schexnayder of Biloxi, Mississippi, Acquanette (Patrick) Mitchell of Ruston, LA. and daughters-in-law Debra Frances Schexnayder and Rosa Pineda Gonzales. He was the loving brother of Rev. Dr. Adele Schexnayder of Vacherie, LA. and the brother-in-law of Doris, Edith and Verna Schexnayder, Angelle G. Brown, Miami G. (Joseph) Williams, Coleman Gibson, Gloria G. (Laphalle) Fuller, and Janet G. Johnson. Also survived by 28 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Because there was no high school for African Americans in St. James Parish during his time, after completing studies at Magnolia "Colored" School in Vacherie he was sent to New Orleans to stay with relatives and graduated from Gaudet High School where one of his classmates was the late La Supreme Court Justice Revius Ortique. As a WWII Navy veteran, he attended Southern University in Baton Rouge briefly on the G.I. Bill. JB was a retired laborer at Kaiser Aluminum in Gramercy. With the help of the Lord and his wife's constant reflection on "The Serenity Prayer", J.B. has celebrated nearly 35 years of sobriety. With retirement and sobriety, he found new ways to pass his time beyond politics - he made his popular pecan candies with coconut and smoked homemade andouille sausage from his mother Mom Veronique's recipe. His greatest strength was being a public servant. In 1970's he became the first African American elected to the St. James Parish School Board. His several-term tenure began during the turbulent years of desegration of the St. James Parish public schools, and reached it's zenith when he became president of the school board in the 1980s. He was also a founding member and president of the Westbank Martin Luther King Scholarship & Aid Foundation and was honored for his lifetime achievements by the organization a year ago at their annual MLK Holiday program. "How fitting it is that he died a day after the birthday of America's "Drum Major for Justice", and that his homegoing is being celebrated not only the day after the National MLK Holiday, but also a day after America has inaugurated it's first African American President (Barak Obama) for his second term of office. J.B.'s and his colleagues' tireless efforts contributed to making these two landmark events possible in his lifetime. As a member of the NAACP he was involved with increasing the numbers of African American voters in the regional parishes area, resulting in an increase the participation in the American political process. He was often seen "holding sessions" with many community residents in his kitchen to help them with finding employment opportunities. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Phillip Catholic Church, oftentimes assisting the priest at special masses. The 1:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Philip will be conducted by Fr. Philip Linden, chair of the Theology Department at Xavier University of Louisiana. For his final resting place, he will be Interned in the church cemetery next to his beloved "baby girl" daughter Sue. He will be missed by all whom loved him. To honor his memory, the family requests that donations be made to the Westbank Martin Luther King Scholarship and Aid Foundation, Vacherie, La. Rest in Peace Mr. J.B.
