John Sikes married Elizabeth Scott in Franklin Parish on October 21, 1862. An index points to Marriage Book B, pages 2 and 3, Franklin Parish, but the document was wrongly filed and thus evaded researchers for years.

Elizabeth was the widow of Henry Montague Scott, Sr. After her marriage to John Sikes, they moved to Jackson Parish, and in 1870 Elizabeth sold her land in Franklin Parish to her son, H. M. Scott, Jr. Documents proving the death of Henry Montague Scott, Sr. prior to 1860 are found in Ouachita Parish Courthouse; the documents concerned the care of a minor son or grandson of Henry's.
