Homicide in Franklin Parish.
One of the most
lamentable occurrences that it has ever been our province to chronicle, took
place on last Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of Mr. H. M. Carroll,
who was killed by J. M. Patterson, one of the party who recently located here
from Arkansas. The difficulty took place hear Cordili's Landing shortly after
the Dickey had gone up. Carroll, who was considerably under the influence of
liquor, picked a quarrel with Patterson for some trivial cause. The latter, to
avoid trouble, left, but was pursued by Carroll and overtaken some 150 yards
from the bank. Carroll struck Patterson who returned the blow, striking him over
the forehead with a stick he had picked up in his fight. Carroll turned, walked
a few steps and fell. He was picked up and carried home and died in three hours.
Mr. Patterson gave himself up at once to Esquire Ward and is now in jail
awaiting the return of Judge Ellis from Harrisonburg to hold a preliminary
examination.
A coroner's inquest was held on Wednesday and a verdict
rendered to the effect that Patterson had killed Carroll in self defense.
The entire community deeply regret this unfortunate occurrence. Marshall
Carroll was an industrious young man, well thought of by the people. He had but
one fault, that of being extremely overbearing when drinking.
Mr.
Patterson has been here but a few months, having purchased part of the Lowry
place. During his short stay he has already made many warm friends and is highly
respected by all who know him.
The preliminary examination will probably
take place Monday or Tuesday - Winnsboro Sun, Jan. 26.
