Subject: [LAGRANT-L] King Family History at Georgetown LibraryKING FAMILY HISTORY AT GEORGETOWN LIBRARY

Bill King of Houston has just advised us that a "preview copy" of THE KING FAMILY HISTORY can be reviewed at the Georgetown Branch of the Grant Parish Library. If you live up in the Selma & Georgetown area, or if you are a descendant of the King group of children that moved down from Southern Arkansas to Selma in early 1900's, you should stop by and browse the book. Remember, however, the copy at the Georgetown Library is "a work in progress" and not a final edited version of the book. JAMES (Jim) & ELIZABETH (Bettie) KING were the parents of the King group that moved down to Selma. Both Jim & Bettie are thought to have died shortly after the 1900 Ouachita County, Arkansas Census of 1900 was taken. The children of Jim & Bettie all born in Southern, Arkansas were:

Thomas L. (b. 1874 - d. before 1914 in Calhoun County, AR)
William Clayborn "Will" (b. 1875 - d. 1940 in Pineville, La.)
(Sweat, Cox, LaCaze, Bruce, Proffer)
Arthur Edward "Red" (b. 1879 - d. 1951 in Pineville, La.)
Lillian V. (Cobb) (b. 1881 - d. 1916 in Selma, La.)
(Williams, Cobb, Henderson, Duff)
Garland (b. 1883 - d. ? ? in Arkansas)
Jesse Melton (b. 1885 - d. 1966 in Ball, La.)
(Cripps, Carter)
Albert Cleveland (b. 1888 - d. 1962 in Jackson, La.)
Bessie (Armstrong) (b. 1892 - d. 1979 in Selma, La.)
(No Children)
George Linnie (b. 1895 - d. 1920 in Selma, La.)(Never Married)
Robert (b. 1897 - d. Unknown in Arizona)
Also, The King Family Association publishes a quarterly 'King Newsletter' that will be mailed 'free' to all family members who register their family group with the Association.

A MESSAGE TO THE KING FAMILIES OF SELMA, GRANT PARISH, LOUISIANA
Original Children of James & Bettie King who lived in Ouachita County, ARK in 1900 I am on Grant Parish web list and enjoy following the Grant Parish activities, but don't see much from members of the site living in the NW section of Grant Parish. Aren't there members from the Selma, Georgetown, & Pollock areas on your list ??
I am searching for descendants of the following families, all descending from the KING children of JAMES M. KING (1850-AR) & BETTIE KING (1858-AR) that were married in Calhoun County, AR in 1873. We think both James and Bettie died sometime shortly after the Ouachita County, AR 1900 census was taken. Most of the children moved to Grant Parish in the early 1900's from Southern Arkansas. All are thought to have been born in Calhoun County, Arkansas near the old community of Artesian, near the Ouachita River.
The KING families that originally moved to Selma in early 1900's. (Listed in birth order-followed by the family names of descendants) were:
WILLIAM CLAYBORN KING (1875-1940), buried at Rake-Straw Cem., Georgetown
+ Mollie HALL, m. abt. 1908, Selma.
(SWEAT-COX-LaCAZE-MOORE-BRUCE-ARMSTRONG-PROFFER)

JESSIE MELTON KING (1885-1966), died at Ball, buried at Rake-Straw Cem,

GEORGE LEONARD KING (1895-1920), died of accidental discharge of a gun while hunting in Selma in 1920, buried at Rake-Straw Cem., Georgetown. "Linnie" served in WW I in Europe. Never married.
ROBERT KING (1897-?) Born in Calhoun CO, AR, died in Arizona in auto accident. Buried Unknown.
+ Offie? Children: Names unknown. This family was said to have been migrant farm workers and traveled from California to Florida. Although some in the family said they came to Selma, no proven evidence of their having lived in Selma has been found.
NOTE: There were other children of JAMES M. & BETTIE KING, but they did not move to Selma from Arkansas. They were:
Thomas L. King, born in AR abt. 1874 and died before 1914.
+ Martha A. Merritt (1891-?)
Children: Laura (1902), Smead P. (1904) Ella (1908), & Nathan (?).
Garland King, b. abt 1883. Nothing is known of this boy. He was living with the Avant family, near the home of James M. & Bettie King, in Washington Township, Ouachita County on the 1900 census. Definite proof of his being the son of James & Bettie HAS NOT been located (just speculation and family stories mentioning an "Uncle Garland", possibly buried at Georgetown).
Note: Please post to your web site mailing list. I would certainly appreciate hearing from descendants of any of these families. We are in process of trying to do a book, "THE KING FAMILIES OF SOUTHERN ARKANSAS, LOUISIANA and BEYOND." A "preview" copy of this book can be reviewed at the Georgetown Library. Any additional help from you "King Cousins" will be greatly appreciated !
I am really looking forward to hearing from anyone knowing the current addresses of any of the above mentioned King and related family names. We are publishing a King Newsletter (quarterly) and will be happy to add the names of any "cousins" wishing to be brought up to date on the hundreds of descendants of the above families. THANKS!!
