Dr. Hugo Arthus Gabert, physician and surgeon, New Orleans, La. This prominent physician, whose residence and office is at 241 North Rampart street, New Orleans, was born in Ryczywol, now Ritschenwalde Provinz, Posen, Germany, May 5, 1852, to the union of August and Henrietta (Doerr) Gabert, both parents deceased. The mother visited the United States and came to New Orleans in 1874 and 1875. The father was a prominent business man and a successful merchant. He was the father of thirteen children, all born in Ritschenwalde; five of them are living and are named as follows: Emma, wife of Gustav Zoeger; Adolph; Ottilie, wife of George Huchne, in Chicago; Hulda, wife of Max Ule, in Ritschenwalde, and Dr. H. A., our subject. The last named was partly reared and educated in his native country and attended the gymnasium at Rogasen Provinz, Posen, for six years to Secunda.

In 1869 he sailed for the United States and landed in New York city. From there he went to Chicago, remained there until 1873, and then came south to New Orleans, where he began the study of medicine. He subsequently entered the University of Louisiana and graduated in 1879, after which he immediately began practicing. This he has continued ever since. He was resident student and visiting physician of Charity hospital. He is a member of the Orleans Parish Medical society, and is also a member of several clubs: Druids, Knights of Pythias, Young Men's Gymnastic club and other organizations. Dr. Gabert was married in 1883 to Miss Augusta Brandner, and they have three living children: Henrietta, Adelaide and Edna.
