Our Families' Journeys Through Time

Noel, Charles

Submitted by Mike Miller

Charles Noel is a member of the firm of Lambou and Noel, of the Jackson Saw & Planing mills, Peliss street, New Orleans, La. He was born in the Crescent city January 19, 1864, and is the son of Joseph Noel, a native of France, who came to the United States in 1857 and settled in New Orleans. Joseph Noel was in the timber business, associated with Mr. Lambou. They succeeded another firm in this business, and at the time they entered it, it was a very small affair, but by his good management and business ability Mr. Noel succeeded in making it one of the most prosperous of its kind at that time. He died in 1878 at the age of forty-four years, a wealthy man, the money all made by his own efforts, and a stanch democrat in politics.

He married in New Orleans Miss Maria Cayet, a native of France, who came to the United States when but five years of age, with her parents. This union was blessed with five children, three now living, of which Charles is the eldest. They were members of the Catholic church. Charles was educated at Bay St. Louis, St. Stanislaus Commercial college, and was taking a full commercial course when he was called home at the death of his father. He took charge of the estate, and as soon as all settlements were made became a partner in the firm of Lambou & Noel. Since his connection with the business they have added a sash and blind factory and have extended the business considerably doing a large local business. Mr. Noel is a remarkably bright and energetic young man, with great business ability and progressive ideas, and is thought a great deal of in business as well as social circles. He is a member of the Commercial college, Young Men's Gymnastic club, chamber of commerce and is the efficient president of the Olympic club. He has become famous the world over through his connection with the last named club. This club is the strongest of its kind in the world and has held more glove contests than any other. In the recent election Mr. Noel has been elected a member of the city council and is chairman of the committee on streets and landings, filling all positions entrusted to him with credit to himself and to the entire satisfaction of all.
