This Wootan Bible
evidently belonged to Susan Wootan. It was "translated out of THE ORIGINAL
TONGUES; and with THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED.
The Bible was printed and published by T. & W. Mercein, No. 95 Gold
Street, New York, 1816." On the page opposite Genesis 1: "This first
American stereotype Bible has been copied from the Edinburgh edition
printed under the revision of the General Assembly of the Kirk of
Scotland, and carefully compared with the Cambridge, Oxford, Hartford, and
New-York editions.
D. & G. Bruce. New-York, June, 1815."
The
pages are extremely fragile, yellow, and flaking. Making copies is out of
the question. On the inside blank pages are the birth records. Some of the
entries are written with the beautiful old-style calligraphy in brown ink.
The ink has eaten away the paper in spots and an outline of the letters
remain. The last entry in the book is the birth of Louis Collins.
