Gaudens Cazes, Brusly Landing, a prosperous planter and representative citizen of West Baton Rouge parish, La., has resided on his present plantation, "Antonia," since 1876, and became owner of the same in 1887. This fine property, situated four miles below the city of Baton Rouge, and consisting of 1,060 acres, with 500 acres that can be cultivated, was formerly the property of J.A. Laurent, of New Orleans. The soil is very fertile and productive and is finely adapted to the raising of cane. Mr. Cazes was born near his present residence, at Brusly Landing, November 26, 1849, and is the son of Gaudens Cazes, Sr., a native of Bordeaux, France, who came to the United States when a young man twenty years of age. He married Miss Emma Blanchard, a native of West Baton Rouge parish, and afterwards located at Brusly Landing, where he followed carpentering until 1866. He then turned his attention to planting in this parish and owned a large tract of land near where his son Gaudens, now resides. He died in 1870, at the age of fifty-five years. Mrs. Cazes is still living and makes her home in Baton Rouge. She is fifty-eighty years of age. Gaudens Cazes, the only child born to the above mentioned union, was educated in St. Charles college at Grand Coteau, and after leaving school he began for himself as a merchant in partnership with Thomas O'Conner, at Baton Rouge. Five years later he commenced his career as a planter, and this seems to have been his proper calling, for he is doing remarkably well. He was a member of the police jury, Ward 3, from 1884 until 1887, and discharged the duties of the same in a very creditable manner.
On
July 1, 1872, he married Miss Louisa Cazes, of West Baton Rouge
parish, and the fruits of this union have been six interesting
children - a son and five daughters. In politics Mr. Cazes
affiliates with the democratic party, and socially he is a member of
the Legion of Honor. The family are all members of the Catholic
church.
