An Aged Negro Woman
Perhaps one of
the oldest persons in the State died on the 15th of May
in the
second ward. Her name was Lethia Faulkner, but was generally
know as Grana Lethia. She died on the Atherton plantation, where she
had been living for the past sixty years or more. Her exact age
is
not known but in 1853 when J.W. Keene purchased her with
other slaves
at a sale in the second ward, and she was then
considerd too old to
work, and had not done any work for several
years. Col. E. W. Constant
considers at least 116 years old or
older. She was taken care of by
the Keene and Constant families,
and never knew what want was. Up to
within a few weeks of death
she could thread a needle, do patch work,
and took a delight in
doing little things about her home. The old
colored woman was
tenderly laid away.
