I am seeking info on the STEPHEN GRANT DOWDEN family originally from Natchitoches,LA. This was my g grandfather. He was sheriff of Natchitoches for many years and wrote several books on the history around Natchitoches and LA. He owned a plantation home down from the old coca cola plant in Natchitoches. His second wife was Eliza. When he died Eliza donated his books to the old normal school which is presently NSU. One of his sons was Stephen Willis Dowden, who married Belle Rhodes, and they resided in Kisatchie, LA. Would appreciate any input on this family history.

M. Bell Sat May 24 15:09:07 1997 ---- ELY, RAINES, GALLIEN
Seek info on ELY, RAINES and GALLIEN. Evalina Ely was a relative who provided my great-aunt information on our family. I do not know her relation, only that she lived in the late 1800's, early 1900's. My gggf was Hoppodyle Derzibain Gallien, born about 1800. He was french Catholic and I do not know where he was born. His wife was Azzenia, and I believe that she was born in LA. She was my ggm's mother; my ggm was Marie (or Mary) Louise Gallien. She was born 1-16-1875 in LA and married Felix P. Raines (born about 1867). Felix and Marie had 7 children, 1 of whom was my gm, Marie Elmena, born 3-8-1908 (I think this is wrong - she was a little cagy about her birthdate), in Natchitoches Parrish. According to family info., my gggf Gallien was a planter in/near Grand Encore; he is listed in the 1880 census as a planter. According to my great-aunt, my ggf Raines was found by S.P. Raines (later a sheriff of Natchitoches Parrish) on a dusty lane "fairly well dressed", placed behind a horse and later adopted by Mr. Raines. I believe his name in the 1880 census was Felix "Bouly" and also seek info. on the BOULY family. Felix Raines reportedly died about the time Marie Elmena was born, and is buried in Campte Cemetery. Other family members (Gallien?) are also reportedly interred there. Is there any way to obtain cemetery records or church records for Parrish members? The family was Catholic and attended/was educated in church/church schools. Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

Inita Segura Sat Jun 7 14:25:42 1997 --- GRAHAM
I have been researching my ancestor, James Graham ca.1788, SC, who was married to Ellender Brewer ca.1790. They settled in what is now Washington Par., and had many children. One of their sons, George Washington Graham, settled in the Natchitoches area around 1864, and raised a family. I have been told that Stanley Graham, who is now deceased, had placed a Graham family chart in the Natchitoches Gen. & Hist. library--and that this is James Graham's family. Could someone please check this for me. I would be overjoyed to find that this is true. Thanks for any trouble. Inita Segura

John married Mary Louise Paul on 9 April 1896 in Avoyelles Parish, had five children with her, and divorced her in 1905 in Avoyelles Parish. She subsequently married Lewis Franklin (Frank) Nichols and had eight additional children. I'm trying to research the Vercher family for my Vercher cousins. John was born in December 1872 (per 1900 census). He later remarried and had other children. The names "Felix" and "Beloni" are remembered by my Vercher cousins. There are many Verchers in the Natchitoches Parish area, and I suspect John came from there. Any information about his parents would be greatly appreciated! Research in Natchitoches Parish question???? Can anyone tell me an explanation of how children in Spanish Catholic families were named? I assume as in French Catholic families, the first name was usually that of a Saint, then the given name, then the surnames of the father? But what was the method used in the early families of Spanish heritage? I have a question about a family in the early days of Natchitoches Parish. In early records an individual is named Joseph Desidere Pareillo when he marries yet in later records he has become simply Joseph Desidere. I found the same thing in another relative in this family--there was an individual named Philozam Desidere Pareillo, Philozam Pareillo, and finally his succession was filed by the name of Philozam Desidere. In one family document there is an individual listed as a witness who signed him name as Desidere Pareillo. These families lived in Natchitoches Parish in the mid to late 1800s. Can someone explain this evolution of these surnames in Natchitoches Parish history? Thank You, Susan

Carol Snoddy Byler Fri Dec 26 17:20:19 1997 ---- SNODDY
Searching for information on Andrew Snoddy and his descendants. Andrew Snoddy, born circa 1755, was still a minor when his elder brother, John Snoddy, made his will in February 1775. There are records of payments to him for services in the North Carolina military forces during the Revolutionary War. In April 1781, he became the Adjutant of the First Regiment of South Carolina State Troops under the command of Lt. Colonel Wade Hampton. Andrew Snoddy survived the war and returned to North Carolina, where in January 1786 he signed a security bond in Rowan County for the marriage of his half-sister, Elizabeth Neill. Then he shifted west, stopping first in the Nashborough settlements (he is listed in numerous Davidson County court proceedings), then continuing into Louisiana where in the 1810 Federal Census counted him in Rapides Parish on the Red River. In 1819, his half-brother, James "Nail" (Neil) swore in Butler County, Kentucky, court that "Andrew Snoddy died near Natchitoches Pecan Point." Pecan Point was one of the principal early settlement on the Red River in the Arkansas Territory north of Louisiana.
