The paternal grandfather of Carleton Hunt Cammack, Robert Chew Cammack, was born in Spottsylvania county, Va., but came to New Orleans and made it the home of his life. He was a commission merchant in the best standing, and a gentleman of fortune and position in the community. Albert Cammack succeeded to his father's business. When the Civil war broke out, he joined the 1st regiment of Louisiana cavalry and served in it until the close of the war, when he returned to business pursuits in New Orleans, but owing to failing health was obliged to retire therefrom.
