Dr. A. S. Dyar, manager in chief, operating and consulting surgeon to Drs. Betts & Betts, 38 St. Charles street, New Orleans, owes his nativity to Georgia, his birth occurring in Atlanta, September 12, 1862. His father, W. J. Dyar, was a native of the Bay state and was a capitalist. He removed to Georgia and was there engaged in speculating for some time. He was killed by a stray shell at the battle of Atlanta. His family consisted of three children; two now living: W. P. and Dr. A. S. The latter received a good practical literary education in the common schools of Leavenworth and at Edgewood academy, from which institution he graduated in 1878. Soon after he began the study of medicine with Dr. T. S. Powell, a distinguished physician of Georgia and an uncle of Dr. Dyar, subsequently entering the Southern Medical college at Atlanta, of which his uncle, T. S. Powell, was the founder. Later he entered Jefferson Medical college, Philadelphia, but went from there to New York city and attended the college of Physicians and Surgeons two courses. He then went to Berlin, Germany, and was in the Academy of Science for two years. Returning to Atlanta, Ga., he was city physician ,for six years and was the first president of the Atlanta Medical society which has since become quite prominent.
In 1888 he came to New Orleans, La., and became a partner with Drs. Betts & Betts. This firm has become quite prominent all over the world. They treat all kind of nervous and private diseases. Socially Dr. Dyar is a member of the Masonic fraternity, the Knights of Pythias and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, being a grand officer in the latter order. He has been commander three years of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was married in 1887 to Miss Esther W. Hunter of Mobile, Ala.
