Among the earlier settlers
of West Feliciana parish, La., may be mentioned Thomas Butler, a
native of Pennsylvania. After residing in the state of his birth
until about 1811 he removed south and settled in West Feliciana
parish, La., where he continued to practice the profession of law,
for which he had fitted himself before leaving his native state. He
was one of the first district judges of this district then extending
through the Florida parishes. In 1818 he entered congress and served
for several years, after which he engaged in planting. About 1844 he
was appointed special judge of this district, which office he held
to the time of his death in 1847. At the time of his death he left a
large family, the survivors still living in the parish, as well as
most of the descendants of those who have died.
