Our Families' Journeys Through Time

Brown, Matthew J.

Submitted by Mike Miller

Foremost among those who have a high standing in the business circles of New Orleans is Matthew J. Brown, who brings the widest possible range of practical experience to bear on this important enterprise with which he is connected. He is associated in business with August Rauxet, with whom he first started out in life at the age of fourteen years. He was born in the city of New Orleans in 1860 to Matthew J. and Mary (Coleman) Brown, the former of whom was born in the state of New York and the latter in the beautiful isle of Erin. The mother was reared in the city of New Orleans and survives her husband who was called from life some years ago. In the public schools of New Orleans Matthew J. Brown obtained a practical education and improved his time to considerable advantage. He is a member of the Roman Catholic church and belongs to the 343d branch of the Catholic Knights of America, of which order he has been a member for eight years and of which be is secretary, he also had the honor of being elected state secretary of the C. K. of A. for two terms, becoming popular and well known in that capacity. He belongs to the Chalmette Benevolent association, the Southern Rifle club and is a prominent and useful member of both orders. In business he is honest, reliable and efficient, and in character is sober, industrious and moral.
