 Felder, George

George Felder, Livinston Parish, Louisiana
Submitted by Mike Miller

George Felder, farmer and sheriff, Port Vincent, La. Mr. Felder's father, Jesse Felder, was born in Mississippi and came to Livingston parish, La., when a boy. Here he was married to Miss Ann West, a native of Louisiana, and here the remainder of his days were passed on a farm. His death occurred on the 16th of July, 1883, but his widow still survives and resides on the old homestead with her children. Their family consisted of nine children, seven of whom are living: Jane, George (subject), Louisa, Zilla, Jesse T., Benjamin B., William (deceased), Robert (deceased) and Anna. George Felder, the second in order of birth of the above mentioned children, is a native of Livingston parish, born on the 16th of February, 1855. He went to school a little while in this parish and was married in December, 1884, to Miss Iowa Carruth, a native of Louisiana and the third of five children: Julia (deceased). Lizzie (deceased), Iowa, Mattie and R. Lee, born to A. W. and Mary (Mellon) Carruth, natives also of Louisiana. Mr. Felder's marriage was blessed by the birth of two children: Nina and Eula (deceased).

Early in life he had instilled into his youthful nature all the duties of farm life and this occupation has ever continued to be his chosen field of labor. He owns about 300 acres of land and has about fifty acres under cultivation. He has always supported the democratic ticket, was appointed sheriff in 1884, re elected in 1888, and still holds that office. He is a member of the Knights of Honor, and gives readily of his means to further all worthy movements.
