One of two
remaining one-room school houses in Winn Parish.
The Brister School House, near Sikes, Louisiana, was built around 1915. It is a one-room schoolhouse built with aspects of Craftsman style. It is located at Parish Road 240 and Brister School Rd.
History: It functioned as a school until 1940,
when rural school consolidation closed the facility. A second room
added in 1920 was removed in the late 1940s.
Preservation: It was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places on August 2, 2001.
Alongside the Phillips School, it is one of only two known surviving
historical schoolhouses in Winn Parish.
Current Status: The property has been
managed and considered for transfer to groups like the Louisiana
Trust for Historic Preservation to help maintain the site, and it is
occasionally used for community reunions.
