appears to have been taken before they added on the "auditorium"; my
dad and uncle
remember it as being an add-on that was big enough
for all the students and their parents.
The Lumber Era Connection: The settlement of Joyce, Louisiana (located just northeast of Winnfield) was established because of the massive sawmill operations of the Tremont Lumber Company. The town itself was named after William Thomas Joyce, a prominent lumber magnate and president of the Tremont Lumber Company and the Winn Parish Lumber Company.
"Old Joyce": Local historical accounts and memoirs from the area refer to the original mill settlement and its immediate surrounding community as "Old Joyce".
Location & Setting: The schoolhouse was originally built near the old Tremont mill site to serve the families of the sawmill workers, loggers, and local farmers.
The Landscape Today: Like many historic rural
logging communities in North Louisiana, when the original timber
stands were cleared and the old mills closed or moved, these
communities shrank dramatically. Today, the physical site where the
Old Joyce school once stood is mostly reclaimed by nature and
characterized by dense plantation pine trees.
