Turn off State Highway 117 onto Long Leaf Trail. Approximately 10 miles up Long Leaf there is a marker for the Beasley Cemetery Road. The cemetery is about 3 miles up the road and you will probably need a 4 wheel drive to get to it.
Beasley Cemetery is located near Lotus, LA, about 15 miles south of Provencal, LA, in the Lotus-Red Dirt area of the Kisatchie National Forest. Turn east off Hwy 117 at the Forest Service Work Center; travel about 5 miles, and the there is a sign on the right indicating the cemetery, which is about three miles along this road. From this point the road is passable only in very dry weather, preferably using sport utility or all-terrain vehicles.
Beasley Cemetery is quite large, and has a nice fence and gate with the name of the cemetery. The cemetery has an old and interesting history, being located adjacent to the old stage road which connected the Natchitoches/Alexandria area and the Texas frontier. The surrounding acreage exhibits land forms unique to this special section of Louisiana, especially notable being the Devil's Backbone, the rocky ledge followed by the early travelers.
Local residents indicate that an effort is made to mow and clean the cemetery yearly. However, the access road appears to traverse several of the soil types indigenous to the Kisatchie Forest: low swampy areas, clear sandy creeks, deep sand beds, white gumbo soil, rocky outcroppings, hills and valleys. Only the hardiest and best equipped visitors venture beyond the first mile.
Special thanks are extended to Mrs. Myra Beasley McGee, Mr. McGee, and Aaron and Courtney, who loaded up four-wheelers and took their neighbor, friend, and teacher on this tour of an historic area of the Kisatchie National Forest.(1999, Nelda Liles)
