DEATH OF THE HONORABLE ALEXANDER BARROW
BALTIMORE, Md. --
Dec.30, 1846 -- The HON. ALEXANDER BARROW, U.S. Senator from the
State of Louisiana, died at Barnum's Hotel yesterday morning, at 5
oclock. He arrived in Baltimore a few days since, in apparently good
health.
He was attacked on Friday night with a violent cold,
to which rapidly succeeded other symptoms of an alarming character.
he was attended from the first, by his friend, DR. SMITH, member of
Congress from the West, and also by DRS. MACKENZIE and BACKLER of
Baltimore and DRS. McCLELLAN and CHAPMAN, of Philadelphia, but in
spite of all the skill of these eminent physicians, his disease
continued to baffle all rememdy!
As a last effort, DR. G. B.
SMITH was called to administer the galvanic battery, but it was
without favorable effect, and he continued to grow worse until death
came to relieve him from pain.
MESSRS. ARCHER and CRITTENDEN
of the Senate, and MESSRS. CROZIER, BELL, GENTRY, FOOTE, and GOV.
VANCE, of the House of Representatives, arrived by the evening train
from Washington, on Monday, in time to be present at the last solemn
scene. They found their friend still in possession of his faculties,
which he retained until the last. SENATOR BARROW was accompanied by
his son, a lad of about 12 years of age. His wife and the remainder
of the family are in Louisiana and have yet to hear of their sad
bereavement.
His remains were attended to the Washington
cars, yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock, by the Mayor and City
Councils, GEORGE R. RICHARDSON, ESQ., Attorney General of Maryland;
and a number of the members of the Bar, and the members of Congress
mentioned above;the Hon. REVERDY JOHNSON, accompanied the remains to
Washington.
